nextgenwars.com has it at barely surrpassing 500k. That is too low. If your going to do a site with sales and least be up to date. I hate that site anyway's because it's always a console war. Besides most of them don't know what they are talking about.

Are the numbers at http://www.vgcharts.org/ legit?
Can the website be trusted?

Excuse my ignorance.

Yes, as they state their sources, unlike certain other websites [cough]nextgenwars[/cough]

You gotta wonder how there can be such a discrepancy between the two sites.

Either one or the other (or both) is more fabrication that truth.

We have a 2M discrepency for XBox 360 and a 500k vs 1M discrepancy for PS3.

Very strange, n'est-ce pas?

That's an horrible estimate if you ask me. Biased for that matter.

Yes. A few things come to mind:

- Vgcharts looks to be showing consumer sales. Their data seems to come from retailers (and probably the NPD data for the US). The nextgenwars.com numbers for the XBox 360 look like SHIPMENTS not consumer sales. Go to any store and see the massive pile of unsold Xbox 360.

- It seems that usually estimates assume that Europe equals the USA for sales. While vgcharts seems to indicate it is something like 50%.

We already know there now are PS/3s selling without movies in them. So, the nextgenwars number for worldwide sales of the PS/3 makes no sense.

And note that the Wii is doing even better according to vgcharts. It would seem odd for people to claim they are PS/3 biased if they are clearly showing the Wii currently kicking the PS/3's ass, and that showing a significant increase in US and European sales for the Xbox 360 this month (700K/400K respecitively this month).

No doubt a certain element will cherry pick what they want to believe from this.

I agree with both of these points.

In any case, one could hardly call the PS3 launch a failure for Sony or for Bluray disc.

Anyone calling the PS3 launch a "failure" is simply spouting fanboy rhetoric. "off to a slow start" would be far more accurate, but now that the shipments are up to speed and some highly anticipated games are coming in March, expect the PS3 to begin catching the Wii in the next 6 months...
