Default 10 million PS3s sold!

Whoo hooo 10 million PS3s sold! I am surprised this isnt bigger news. Unless I missed the post again(which wouldnt be the first time).

Also adding to Blu-ray's momentum was the gradual increase in sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 home video-game console, which also works as a Blu-ray player. Sony has sold 10.5 million PS3 machines worldwide since the machine went on sale late 2006.
According to VGChartz... 10.03 million sold.

Looking at the "from launch" chart, you can see that the PS3... got to 10 million much faster than the xbox 360, and is keeping pace with the PS2. NOT bad... Not bat at all! With the heaviest hitters yet to come(MGS4, FFXIII, GT5)... it looks like a bright future.

Yep, just like the prior version made PS2 sales take off. Same will happen here.

This is 10.5m sold to retailers, not consumers.

It is remarkable that somewhere north of 9m of these have been sold to consumers considering the rough birth and first year it had.

Hopefully Sony is finished with revising their estimates downward and will see brighter days ahead.

VGChartz reports sales to customers. They have reported 10.03 million

The MSNBC article makes no mention of sales to consumers or retailers. being as they are MSnbc, you would think they would say... shipped to retailer, rather than sold.

VGChartz is an interesting website, but their numbers are conjectures that at times vary widely with NPD and famitsu/media create. Just look at Jan. 08, for example. Its fun to look at the website, but it really must be taken with a large grain of salt.

MSNBC took the number 10.5m from Sony's financial report. Sony's accounting practices consider "sold" to be "sold to retailer".

Here is total shipped each quarter:
PS3
Oct-Dec 2006 1.66M
Jan-Mar 2007 1.91M
Apr-Jun 2007 0.71M
Jul-Sep 2007 1.31M
Oct-Dec 2007 4.90M

Total 10.49M

All three console companies count their numbers this way, which is how MS managed "to get to 10m first"-by dumping millions in the channel that sat for months waiting to get sold.

I'm quibbling of course, as these numbers are fairly similar to each other.

Winning the format war will only increase interest / sales of PS3 consoles.

Well, if MSNBC, is quoting sold to retail data from 50 days ago... it is misleading.

If MSNBC is using data from December, they should have said "by the end of December, sony sold 10.5 million" Its already mid-late February.

Yeah, unfortunately that's what you get with the media. Especially when they report on technology using numbers.

Oh well.
