the punisher does lots of heroic things...but isnt a hero

Posting Joss Whendon's version of the punisher isnt really appropriate since he hates the character and doesnt reflect the guy...

He is a badass who isnt afraid to take a hard stance....His dynamic is fun to read if given the right writer (hasnt been lately, remender and fraction suck)

he is no way shape or form a superhero or hero of any kind. he is a homicidal maniac. a hero fights injustice to protect the innocent, Frank kills criminals because he hates them. its personal for him.
now, there are times when he gets caught up in something and it becomes about protecting the innocent, but the mission and his main goal is making sure every criminal is dead. period. not a hero, pure vigilante.

Frank Castle is all about protecting the innocent. That's why he hunts criminals, so that no one has to go through what he went through with his family being caught in the crossfire of gang violence.
He actively saves innocent people all the time.

no, its not so no one has to go through what he went through. its his revenge against criminals. Batman does it so no one has to go through what he went through, The Punisher does it because they ruined his life.
heres a dialogue between him and Joan from Welcome Back Frank:

Quote:
Joan: Why do you kill them?
Frank: Uhh..?
Joan: Bad people, I mean.
Frank: I hate them.
Joan: Oh. I thought it might be because you wanted to make the world safe for good people.

Revenge wise it would have ended at when he killed the mob family that killed his family but that hidden motive is in there. He does care for the safe being of others but he's such a cold human being he doesn't want to admit it and yes he does hate them.

At the end of the day Punisher is like Venom. A violent hero, yes he can be super because he accomplishes feats not many heroes can, he's a one man army but because of his cruel nature he's a antihero.

I thought the 2004 depiction was perfect as it depicted him as a good hearted man but a broken spirit and the end establishes him as a hero as he is on the hunt. Punisher has faded away in comics because he's just become a generic killer, they need to get a really good writer on the series and revamp it just like Ed Brubaker did for several outlets, put him on the case.

i thought one of the glaring flaws of the 2004 movie was portraying him as good hearted and heroic.
in regards to the comics i dont know what you are talking about, they already had a really good writer (one of the greatest writers in comic book history) revamp the series, and it still stands as one of the best comic books ever published.

Hey Now! LOL. No offense. Just playn.

But seriously this is a topic that I have argued with many people.

I heard: "how do you delcare someone from the X-Men a superhero, when they are declared mutants or 'biological tests'".

"How is Thor a superhero if he is more like a god."

I think Punisher is a superhero.

im curious how much of his stuff youve actually read to come to that conclusion. you are of course entitled to you opinion but ive never met a comic fan who didnt like Preacher or Punisher MAX. The Boys i couldnt get into at all but Preacher and his run with Frank pretty untouchable imo.

Some of Preacher, some of Punisher Knights/Max, and most of his Judge Dredd. He's all about the shock value and is not very good at telling stories. And he repeats himself. Him and Mark Millar are my least liked popularized comic writers. There are so many writers who are more skilled at the sort of things they write.

Well, none. But Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe was...okay even if most of it was unlikely. And Welcome Back Frank was somewhat tolerable. When he gave The Russian boobs I checked out.

Depends on who's writing him. A lot of people know the character from Garth Ennis' run on the series. While I'm a big fan of much of it, he does twist the character somewhat. The whole "I kill criminals because I hate them and saving people is an afterthought" angle is more of an invention of his.
