Ridley Scott is making another Blade Runner

Leave Harrison out of this remake, prequel, re-imagine or whatever will be decided.

I want something in the same universe with a new cast and story.

I agree with you bud. The key words here is open mind. Too many people don't know what that is, and they pass judgement right away. I know everyone is tired of reboots, and remakes and so forth. But, Hollywood is gonna do what it wants to do, and they'll keep doing it, so long as the movie theatres are being filled to see these remakes and reboots. You don't like it...no one is forcing you to go see it. Simple enough.

I mean - its not a bad flick but there is a reason it didnt do well at theaters. The reason is that people expected something way different than what they got and the bad word-of-mouth killed it.

The film has achived sort of a cult-like following and I think people, me included, appreciate it more now than back then. But, it IS lacking and no matter how many cuts they do, it aint ever gonna be a major, epic film.

As for this new endeavor, I wish Ridley the best and I hope its good.

You and me both - I dont mind a remake of a really old, horribly cheesey film. Especially Sci-Fi where most of those older flicks are laughably bad. But, Blade Runner is well-made and like most of the other reboots being crammed down everyones throat, it does NOT need a remake or a reboot.

A prequel or sequel is one thing...we'll see how this goes.

If it's anything similar to Westwoods 1997 BLADE RUNNER video game I'd love it. Why not an adaptation of Dust to Dust?
In the meantime I wish TOTAL RECALL 2070 got a seasons 2-8. I'd buy it on Blu-ray, especially if it was loaded with extra features.

I couldn't disagree more. I think much of the film's incredible atmosphere is down to Vangelis' score.

Vangelis's score for BR is completely classic.
It was also nominated in the top 250 best scores of all time by the AFI, just didn't make the top 25.

I love Blade Runner, it like many people here is my favourite film. Boring isn't really the right way to describe it, but the imagery and pacing in the first third can get to you some times. Oppressive is probably a better word for it, even Harrison's yawning in the first ten minutes and the rain.... man that can beat the casual viewer down. I usually watch my movies late so if I put BR on one or two hours after midnight then it's tough to get through. Then BANG! we have the wonderful chase with Zhora and Deckard (Se7en has a brilliant chase sequence which brings you back to life as well).

But thats the charm of Blade Runner it's lyrical.... it's a dream and if you aren't on the ball it will put you to sleep. Christopher Nolan's Insomnia has similar problems: how do you show a guy so on the edge and so tired that you don't make the audience feel the same?

Remember Blade Runner is a detective movie were the dectective does hardly any detecting. He's not a super hero either, he doesn't get the bad guy (if there is even a bad guy) the only two Replicants he kills are two women, Zhora and Pris. How can you even route for the guy? It's hard for the audience to grab onto something unless they're really up for it.

It's a dystopian world and the pacing is ponderous, it's an art film hiding in a science fiction thriller. Remember the trailers with the metal noise as the titles go past? Audiences thought it was going to be Indiana Jones in the future or another Star Wars with their new action superstar Harrison Ford (directed by the guy who scared them up the aisles all over the world). It never was and it never should have been.

The little quirks are what make Blade Runner so interesting it's a near perfect film masterpiece. Where if you change this or change that maybe it would be perfect but it would never be quite so interesting.

But Boring? No, never.... take a couple of hits of your favourite go-juice and enjoy the ride!

Not sure about another one though, Blade Runner's moods, themes and imagery have been plundered for thirty years. Unless it was a new [Off] world and a new enviroment it may not be even needed. Sir Ridley's new film sounds very interesting but I'd want Hampton Fancher to have some involvement in a new Blade Runner venture.

I absolutely refuse to movies in 3D. I hate that film makers are forcing this down our throats when in 99% of movies it is completely unneccessary and does nothing to enhance the experience. It's simply a gimick that people are being suckered into paying for.

Exactly! Open minded is the key word, and as you said they (movie studios) will continue to do what ever they want as long as people keep giving them thier money. Which is why, as I said above, I absolutely refuse to pay for anything 3D. I believe it already has (albeit slight) and will continue to reduce the quality of movies being made. Directors and wirters are now changing the style of the movie to takae advantage of cheesey 3D effects rather than focusing on telling a good story.

In regards to reboots/remakes and prequals/sequals; Time elapsing between the original and the last installment was mentioned as being a factor in whether or not it is an effective addition to the story.

Star Wars original vs Star Wars new trilogy
Alien/Aliens vs Alien Resurection
Godfather 1/2 vs Godfather 3

As much as I can see where this hold up to a certain extent, I would say that I'm not sure TIME is the problem here.

What about the latest installment of Star Trek? It's a prequel to the original movies which there were six of release over 12 yeaars (1979-1991), then the prequel to the very first one come out of nowhere to be released in 2009. That's 30 years after the original which it preceeds and 18 years after the last one in the series. That's the second longest time span I can think of for such and occurance and I personally really enjoyed the Star Trek prequel.

By the way, the longest time span from original release to a prequel that I know of is the Bond series. I don't know the dates off hand, but I think it's safe to say it's an accurate statement. Again, the prequel, made some 50 years after the first in the series, was very enjoyable in my opinion.

Heh, I think that's exactly what will happen. He's going to get everybody all jacked up (both pro and against) for a Blade Runner something-or-other-quel and once that connection is set in everybody's minds he'll shift gears and this will become an independent project.

Which is a pretty nice scam, if you think about it.

People are still talking about Prometheus as if it were part of the Alien franchise but he's keeping all the money.

Interesting. Considering you're an Alien fan, I would expect you to love the film. I think Alien and Blade Runner have similar pacing.
