Default Ridley Scott is making another Blade Runner

Updated: May 31, 2013

Alcon, Ridley Scott Announce They’ve Hired Michael Green To Script Blade Runner 2

LOS ANGELES, CA, MAY 31, 2013, 3:30 pm, EST—Writer Michael Green is in negotiations to do a rewrite of Alcon Entertainment’s “Blade Runner” sequel penned by Hampton Fancher (“Blade Runner,” “The Minus Man,” “The Mighty Quinn”) and to be directed by Ridley Scott. Fancher’s original story/screenplay is set some years after the first film concluded.

Alcon co-founders and co-Chief Executive Officers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce with Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin, along with Ridley Scott. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

Green recently completed rewrites on “Robopocalypse” and Warners Bros “Gods and Kings.”

Alcon and Yorkin previously announced that they are partnering to produce “Blade Runner” theatrical sequels and prequels, in addition to all television and interactive productions.

Ridley Scott Ready To Direct New Version Of Seminal Sci-Fi Film 'Blade Runner'
By MIKE FLEMING

After revisiting his classic Alien with the upcoming 3D Fox film Prometheus, Ridley Scott is committing to direct and produce a film that advances his other seminal and groundbreaking science fiction film. Scott has signed on to direct and produce a new installment of Blade Runner. He’ll make the film with Alcon Entertainment, producing with Alcon partners Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. This would be the most high profile project for Alcon since The Blind Side.

I’m not getting a clear sense at this point whether Scott intends to do a sequel or a prequel to the 1982 film that was loosely based on the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Also unclear is whether they start fresh or reach out to Harrison Ford, who starred that took place in dystopian Los Angeles in 2019, in which organic superhuman robots called replicants escaped and are hiding somewhere on earth. Ford played Richard Deckard, a burnt out blade runner assigned to hunt them down. His tired life gets altered when he himself falls for one of the replicants and struggles to keep her from being destroyed.

The film was not a blockbuster when first released--it grossed $32 million in its original run--but the film has gained esteem over time. From the bleak but breathtaking visuals to the complex storyline and themes of mortality, Blade Runner became a classic. There has periodically been talks of doing a sequel but those never really went anywhere. After injecting state of the art 3D in reviving Alien, imagine what Scott can do with Blade Runner? Now, the filmmaker is ready to engage. Alcon has its output deal with Warner Bros, which remastered and released a 25th anniversary version on DVD and Blu-Ray in 2007. Warner Bros made the original film.

This is just the first step and the project will have to be written and it will likely evolve during that process. That's what happened on Alien, which began as a prequel to his 1979 classic. That changed when Lost's Damon Lindelof came in with a different take on the subject matter that imprinted on Scott and Fox executives. They wound up making Prometheus, which Fox considers an original but which I've heard is a cousin to the original Alien franchise. That film will be released June 8, 2012, with Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Patrick Wilson, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce starring.

I really hope Prometheus is a critical and commercial success, because otherwise this attempt at another Blade Runner film will never take off. Oh, and I hope fanboys won't roast Ridley Scott for re-visiting his great movies from 30 years ago. That seems to be the standard reaction of fanboys --- build up a movie with hype, and tear it down mercilessly if it's anything less than completely perfect.

Not surprised and not interested. Everything is a remake/reboot/sequel/prequel to [insert 30-year-old classic here] nowadays. But there is only one Blade Runner. Besides, he already George Lucas'ed this film with numerous director's cuts and redone special effects in the 2007 "Final" Cut.

This could be interesting. All things considered it can't possbly be any more boring than the original.

That makes no sense.

I'm not a huge fan of Blade Runner, but I'd be curious to see a prequel or sequel. If it's a reboot, I'll pass entirely.

It's official. We're stuck, creatively in the industry. Remake. Reboot. Prequel. Sequel (which I technically don't mind because I love episodic storytelling...if it's a planned franchise). Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

I love Ridley, but this is a mistake, as is his new film Prometheus.

Why go back?

Inception is looking better and better every day now....

I'm not a huge fanboy but I'm up for this. I know its a prequel or sequel but at least it's not a reboot or remake. Now a revision? IDK

With me it's, really intertained until a little over halfway through I lose all interest until the last 5-10mins. Ir's been like that but I do keep looking at my BR case from time to time to give it another shot. Why do I have it you ask? Because I wanted to buy it.

I don't mind a reimagining of this film like Battlestar Galactica. They should definitely not bring back any orignal cast members. The story line should take place on the asteroid mining colonies where the rebellions took place. Any attempt to recreate the original will fail miserably.

They can bring Harrison Ford back as the human on which Deckard was based on. That would work either as a prequel, a sequel, or a parallel story.

And I don't understand all these people thinking that this would be some kind of re-boot. I mean... why the heck would Ridley Scott re-boot his very own film? Re-boots are only done when you hand off the franchise to a different filmmaker.

Don't you just love when people crap on a film they haven't even SEEN yet? Based on...what, exactly? Nothing, that's what.

As for this new Blade Runner prequel/sequel/reboot, what-freakin'-ever. I would tend to think FORD won't want to go back & revisit that character, but you never know I suppose. W/out him, will Audiences (more importantly) even want to See a new version, & if so, who will Ridley cast in his place?
