No, because there will still be a HD DVD release of this title.

I assume then that Warner's "old" contract prevents them from releasing superior video encodes on Blu-Ray correct?

Or simply reluctance to do double work.

Ya but, from your opening post in this thread (Dave Vaughn comments), it sounds like a new high bitrate optimized Blu-Ray encode would'nt be much work at all

Indeed. While HD DVDs are still being released don't expect any optimised releases for Blu-ray. If we do happen to get one, well, it would be for a major title that is already out on HD DVD...

Well that makes the decision for me easy on Legend since I wasn't sure if I was going to purchase it.

Is there any chance that they will re-encode the Matrix or V with higher bit rates? I really wanted these but won't buy any more Warner HD DVDs even if they're packaged in a blue case.

THey could, it doesn't mean they will

Warner is likely continuing to use VC-1 because their engineers are comfortable with the toolset

Indeed, but I have heard some people are eager to get down and dirty with the latest AVC tools which are very good and get better results than VC-1 in 9/10 cases.

Some of WB titles have been pretty good. I loved how Blade Runner looked.

Blade Runner is a special title that took a very long time to get right, but we can't expect that for all titles which is why this is such a big advantage for Blu-ray.

Ouch for Microsoft.

In that connection, what's the outlook for second-tier compression houses and studios? Not everybody has top-rate compressionists like the major companies do, so the more foolproof, the better.

WOW! AVC gets better results then VC-1 in 90% of cases

Any truth to ramblings about AVC encodes taking substiantialy longer then VC-1 encodes? Or is that just more FUD?

No VC-1 is much faster, this is it's major advantage, the margin by which AVC is better is not deemed big enough for the moment because it is not as fast as VC-1.

The tools are all in place for AVC to become significantly faster than VC-1, but like verything it will just take a bit of patience.

this has been discussed many times here in this forum and yes this is true.

there is a good article about it in dvdfile.com comparing AVC and VC-1 results so far was better for AVC rather than VC-1.But doesnt mean at all if VC-1 was better encoded like some of Disney titles Deja Vu for example

Well unless MS are still giving away free tech support then I don't know about the future of VC-1.

PEP isn't the easiest thing to use, but like I said it is very fast compared to the competition, so it all depends on what the priorities of the post-houses are.

Thanks Maxpower
Good to know. Especially the part about AVC eventually becoming faster then VC-1. Anything to punish Microsoft is good

P.S. That's the sad part about this war: there is SOOO much FUD being spread around by MS and HD DUD supporters that you can't discern the onces of truth from the mounds of crap

Maybe someone at sony should write a BE optimized AVC codec and let the PS3 be a workhorse in both production of BR movies and playback.
