Default Awful Download Speeds

Hi Everyone! Last night I had to download and install an update for uncharted two, and today I tried to dowload the latest update for the ps3 system. I connect to the same wireless network as my computer, however my computer internet connection and download speeds are terrific, whereas the ps3 download speed is unbelievably slow. After hours this morning the main ps3 update only downloaded to I think 58%. Is there any particular reason for this I don't know about?

Is there something downloading on the computer? It could be using up the bandwidth.

yeah, we have 2 ps3's on the network at home, and while one was DLing a TV episode last night, it made gaming on the other one nearly impossible, so much lag because the DL was taking up all the network bandwidth, if you have a lot of devices on there being used or if you are DLing a bunch of stuff on one of them, it can really slow down your network

Also its good to have your router secure with encryption so you don't have people free-loading your bandwidth.

What does the bandwidth test show? It's under the test network connection part, I think.

It's just slow, plain and simple - nothing you can do about it. I have the same thing - downloading 300MB on the computer doesn't take long at all but on the PS3 it takes forever. Always has.

That's not his issue. The system update usually only takes a few minutes at most so if it's taking hours, something is definitely wrong.

Not really, depending on the regional game store and when I'm downloading from it, 300MB could take anywhere from 4 to 10 minutes wirelessly which ranges from great to pretty average for a free service download.

You could try a speed test website through the PS3 browser; but like me you'll probably find that it records similar speeds to your PC so I think it's just the PSN itself that is restricted.

Sony need to make more bandwidth available at their end so we can DL at the best speed our lines can offer.

Ever try renting an HD rental 5 Gigs takes upwards of 2.5+ hours. It's the Playstation or PSN itself that takes awhile system updates take forever but I don't know about being at 58% in an hour or so that doesn't seem right...

I think the speed test in the network settings would be more accurate.

I did some test

My internet speed: 30Mbps

Speed test on my Laptop: 28Mbps
Speed test on my PS3: 22Mbps

Speed test, Laptop+PS3 at the same time:
Laptop: 26Mbps
PS3: 10Mbps

So if you want to speed things up on your PS3, don't use your computer too much while downloading.

Big drop! I use both of my PS3's and laptop at the same time from time to time and have never noticed any drops...then again I'm not really paying attention or doing any tests. My connection seems to either be working, slow, or broken no matter what I throw at it.

I was afraid to include my slim in the test...But don't forget that a speed test takes all your bandwidth so if we only surf on our Laptop, we should be good.

Yep I wasn't doing anything network intensive, although I have had both PS3's playing online games at the same time before with no issues.

That's still over 1MB/sec which I doubt anyone would be complaining about and this isn't representative of everyone's network setup.

I can only dream of such speeds! I typically achieve a speed of about 690Kps on a speed test; but as a matter of course I tend to leave my PS3 to download large files over night and switch itself off - despite this it has still taken many, many hours to download some files.

Far longer than my line speed suggests, which leaves me to believe it has to be the PSN itself that is the throttle, not my ISP

I pretty much always get over 1MB/sec from the Japanese (Game) store and the last couple of Thursday's at least, the same from the Euro and US stores but it's been like that in the past, then dropped to 400-600KB/sec normality again the next week.

I can only use the UK video store, only used it once to rent and the download speed was poor, between 100-200KB/sec.

With a free service they should prioritise paid-for downloads with the highest bandwidth and then provide the best service possible for other free downloads.

I agree; I pay for rentals but they take longer to download than a game demo! SD movies weigh in at about 1.5Gb while some demo's are closer to 2Gb but they download far faster.

It once took me close to 7 hours to download a 1.5Gb movie rental, but only 2 and half hours to download 2.5gb of game videos! How does that work?!?!
