I agree with the others who are saying if you don't have an HD-ready TV, don't bother.
You do realize that there is/was a problem with that and that Sony is addressing it with firmware updates? I highly doubt it was intentional to drive new games. Even when the Xbox 360 came out they also had their share or compatability issues.
