I don't know enough about onkyo receivers to say anything about them, however I do own 2 Denon products the avr 3805 receiver and the dvd 5900 dvd player I can tell you that build quality is truly amazing, sound quality is the best that I have ever heard from a receiver and then there is customer support with firmware updates to improve and enhance the performance and satisfaction of their customers.

On the second hand, if these were really wide-spread issues, how could both Onkyo's be rated SO highly? Maybe it's only a small precentage of them that have the lip sync issue (they ALL have the heat issue). How could anyone live with a lip-sync issue? The heat can be dealt with, but not the sound delay.

But then on the third hand, is it worth the chance and hassle if you get a bad one? The Onkyo may be a little cheaper than the Denon, but if you get the Onkyo you should consider the costs/hassle of adding a fan - so the price difference is insignificant.

The Denon can scan your networked puters and play music files it finds, that's kinda cool. Plus the ability to contol the unit from a "zone".

All thise "little" extras seem to tip the scale toward the Denon.

I had not looked into the Pioneer, It does seem to be the "nicest looking" of the 3, but thats not much of a consideration. I'll look into the Pioneer features more to see what's its all about. I'm glad it was mentioned.

I never got any lip syncing issues with mine. There's also delay settings on my 805 to fix that which I'm sure is on the 705 as well. As for the heat issues, as long as people actually read the manual and put enough space for the Onkyo, there is no issue and no need for a fan.
Unfortunately the Onkyo can't do the network thing. I believe the next one up can. I would've gone for that except I figured it's kinda a wasted feature. The PS3 can do the exact same thing so I don't need my receiver to do it as well. As for Zone 2 and 3, the 705 and 805 both support that just like the 3808 does.

wow denon is expensive. I will probably just stick with the 705 unless I see the $630 price on amazon for the 805 like I saw a few hours ago. Rike how much space is required... my entertainment center is all wood and the shelf I will put it on is 9 inches high and 22 inches wide

The manual says you need a full 8" above the receiver and 4" behind it. I also have a wood shelf for mine and I tested a few heights. I left it with about 5-6 inches above the receiver and there is plenty of room for the heat to dissipate so 8 is probably an over pre-caution.
Behind I made about a 3 inch gap but there's almost no heat coming out of the rear so I doubt you need to worry about that.
The top of the receiver does get fairly warm to the touch but that's completely normal.

When I had about 3 inches of space above the receiver it didn't get any hotter then it does now with 5 inches but I moved it just to be safe.

With only 9 inches of shelf room you won't have enough room for any receiver. The unit itself is 7 and a half inches tall. Oh and 22 wide is fine that's how wide my shelf is. That doesn't leave room for anything on the sides though as the reciever is 17" wide and 18" deep.

aren't there small fans that you can set up on the back of entertainment units to provide better circulation?

Yep and I would've gone that route but I have plenty of room in my stand so there's no need. If you don't have enough room for 8" of space a fan will do just fine.

Just for fun I checked the 705 manual and the 3808 manual. The 705 says the same thing as the 805:

Quote:
18. If you install the apparatus in a built-in installation,
such as a bookcase or rack, ensure that there is adequate
ventilation.
Leave 20 cm (8") of free space at the top and sides
and 10 cm (4") at the rear. The rear edge of the shelf
or board above the apparatus shall be set 10 cm (4")
away from the rear panel or wall, creating a fluelike
gap for warm air to escape.
-From 705 and 805 manual

The 3808 manual says not to put the receiver in a bookcase or rack.

By the way when I was asking these questions about my receiver someone pointed me to this site, he said that he uses these fans to keep his receiver cool and that they work well.

ya i will stick with the 705, that will give me a little more room as it is only 6.9 inches. I will see how hot it gets and look at better ventilation later. and it should have about 7 or 8 inches in the back because my entert. center is prety deep.

Good call. You'd probably be fine with the 805 as well but it's better safe then sorry. Plus you can save a bit of money that way.

There is a lip-sync setting , but I have heard many say that setting the delay to zero still results in noticible delay.
I'm guessing it depends on the firmware version.

I know the onkyo's have remote zone, but do they allow you to control the receiver from a remote location like the Denon does?

The lip-sync delay is for HDMI only and defaults at 40 msec. I turned the lip-sync feature off and then set the overall delay at 5 msec. Looks and sounds perfect! Go for the 805, it has a panel that covers all the ugly buttons and inputs. I love my 805!
