Default Denon AVR3808CI or Onkyo TXSR875

Denon AVR3808CI or Onkyo TXSR875 ? Having a difficult time choosing - without regard to price, which would you choose?

Both of them are excellent receivers. Read the following reviews:

Onkyo TX-SR875

Weird, that CNET review mention GUI lock up for the 3808ci.. never had one since i bought it 4 months ago.. maybe they reviewed a Pre Prod model or early FW revision.. Internet Radio is a godsend!

I don't know enough about onkyo receivers to say anything about them, however I do own 2 Denon products the avr 3805 receiver and the dvd 5900 dvd player I can tell you that build quality is truly amazing, sound quality is the best that I have ever heard from a receiver and then there is customer support with firmware updates to improve and enhance the performance and satisfaction of their customers.

wow denon is expensive. I will probably just stick with the 705 unless I see the $630 price on amazon for the 805 like I saw a few hours ago. Rike how much space is required... my entertainment center is all wood and the shelf I will put it on is 9 inches high and 22 inches wide

The manual says you need a full 8" above the receiver and 4" behind it. I also have a wood shelf for mine and I tested a few heights. I left it with about 5-6 inches above the receiver and there is plenty of room for the heat to dissipate so 8 is probably an over pre-caution.
Behind I made about a 3 inch gap but there's almost no heat coming out of the rear so I doubt you need to worry about that.
The top of the receiver does get fairly warm to the touch but that's completely normal.

When I had about 3 inches of space above the receiver it didn't get any hotter then it does now with 5 inches but I moved it just to be safe.

With only 9 inches of shelf room you won't have enough room for any receiver. The unit itself is 7 and a half inches tall. Oh and 22 wide is fine that's how wide my shelf is. That doesn't leave room for anything on the sides though as the reciever is 17" wide and 18" deep.

aren't there small fans that you can set up on the back of entertainment units to provide better circulation?

Yep and I would've gone that route but I have plenty of room in my stand so there's no need. If you don't have enough room for 8" of space a fan will do just fine.

Just for fun I checked the 705 manual and the 3808 manual. The 705 says the same thing as the 805:

Quote:
18. If you install the apparatus in a built-in installation,
such as a bookcase or rack, ensure that there is adequate
ventilation.
Leave 20 cm (8") of free space at the top and sides
and 10 cm (4") at the rear. The rear edge of the shelf
or board above the apparatus shall be set 10 cm (4")
away from the rear panel or wall, creating a fluelike
gap for warm air to escape.
-From 705 and 805 manual

The 3808 manual says not to put the receiver in a bookcase or rack.
