I believe you're thinking of Citizen Kane, but you're right about the hype behind The Rules of the Game.

I've seen it and it's a fantastic little nugget of a film for Criterion, but I'm afraid if Criterion didn't get a hold of it no one else would have distributed it. Kino Video maybe, but none of the big studios. Then again you could say that (not in any way negative of course) about a lot of Criterion films.

It's on a "I'll buy it eventually list when I run out of stuff to buy" list. It's good but not a top title via my standards.

Speaking of Rules of the Game, I wish Criterion would try to release Godsford Park since I had seen that film first and it reminded me so much of Rules of the Game. It deserves a good BLU release for sure. unless Universal releases it unharmed always a coin toss w/ them.

Yeah...I expect them to get to "Night on Earth" at some point. That's one of my favs of his. The scene with Benigni as the taxi driver in Italy is a scream. A funny and poignant film...

I didn't find it hype. I thought The Rules of The Game was brilliant. Although I agree technically Citizen Kane is a much more accomplished feat.

While I do enjoy Night on Earth, New York is my favorite part of that film. It's funny, dramatic and touching with great character interaction throughout. I can't stand the Rome story. People always claim that's the best part of the whole film, but I'm really not sure why. The crap Benigni tells is pretty lame in my book. I enjoyed the much-maligned L.A. story more than Rome.

The 2 biggest things for me that feel the same between Leon Morin and Le Silence De La Mer would be exploring interpersonal dynamics in Nazi occupied France, and the slow development of a relationship between characters that have very different positions in life. Both of these things i found fascinating, which is probably why i loved both films.

Gosford Park is fantastic, although I enjoyed it more than the Rules of the Game. it's one of my favourite Altmans actually.

I remember reading a press release on this site a while back with a boxset of Kubricks really early films (I think it included docos as well). I tried searching for these titles just now since I forgot all about them, but I couldn't come up with anything. Anyone know who was meant to release these and what happened?

Based on the fact that you like Army of Shadows...I think you will love Le Silence De La Mer. It's another WWII film (which are a favorite area for me) and it's a simpler, more accessible film. Visually stunning and offering a much different perspective on the Germans.

I actually enjoyed the last segment in Helsinki the most. Very moving and the cinematography is wonderful. I know it might not be Robby Mueller, but the shots in Helsinki are nice nonetheless.

It's always nice to see people become more enlightened and expand their horizons — that also happened to me over time. When I was a kid, I had that irrational prejudice against black & white films, any picture older than just a few years or anything that wasn't a big budget spectacular. I didn't care about actors and I cared even less about directors, writers and producers.

That's all changed and I'm much the wiser and happier for it.
