Default Great reciever

I have the Onkyo 705 and they or very good recievers. I have mine hooked up 7.1 the big difference is the 705 has THX select 2 decode and 605 doesn't. It will decode all the new DTS and Doby HD codes. It is also HDMI 1.3 ready.

You'll be fine with that for now as only a few discs are taking advantage of 7.1. What are you using as a player?

Man, I either need to stop drinking or take a nap...Not sure how I missed that one... sorry..

Just make sure you go through the audio options and only select the 5.1 audio outputs from the PS3. Once you upgrade you can change that. Also the Onkyo's setup program will ask you if you are using 7 or 5 speakers so no need to worry about missing anything!

Everything except Dts-HD Master. (ps3 does not support internal decoding/external bitstream)

...hopefully in the near future, added support for internal decoding of Dts-HD Master.

Crack was talking about the PS3, not the Onkyo. The Onkyo can handle these just fine. The PS3 doesn't yet have DTSHD-MA decoding, but we've all been told it will... Just need to wait for more players to hit the market with this ability (and for the software to be completed/bud tested)

Uncompressed PCM doesn't get compressed... It is a bit for bit duplicate of the master... Yeah the PS3 can handle it.

Basically the PS3 decodes the codecs onboard and then sends them over HDMI to the receiver as PCM.

There shouldn't be a difference between PCM, TrueHD and DTSHD-MA. They are all bit for bit copies of the Master source. The best way to think about TrueHD and DTSHD-MA are that they are zipped versions of the Master. You dont' loose any information they are just a much more efficient way of carrying the info.

The Onkyo 605 can decode both Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD Master, the problem is the PS3 does not support it, nor can it output it as bitstream. It will only send the "core" 1.5mbps dts track, which is still excellent though.
