Also, they're trying to do away with standard DVD-only releases and making combo packs only slightly more expensive helps in a big way. Why pay $17 for only the DVD when the combo pack is $20?
Regarding getting the DVD's almost free i think that recent prices of these combo packs don't reflect that

Really? Getting a 4-disc 3D combo of Avengers or Prometheus (w/ U&S) for $19.99 is too expensive? Get out.

some stores have the combo packs for like 24 or 30 dollars where a blu ray only is sometimes 20 and the dvd is sometimes 16 look at the katy perry movie that came out the dvd was $12 the blu ray with the dvd was $16 and the 3d blu ray with regular dvd and regular blu ray was $24 so your paying a little more for blu ray combo pack at least i think

Because DVDs are good for giveaways to friends and family that is not interested in Blu-Ray or does not have a Blu-Ray, I always give my friend the DVDs since she is not interested in Blu-Ray

The DVDs in the combo packs are good for any family members who do not own a Blu-ray player yet. They're also good for trips in the car for the kids when it comes to family films. I buy combo packs whenever possible. I don't think they're a waste of space at all. They actually come in handy sometimes.

i under stand doing that for kiddy movies so they can watch in the car but what about the dvds in movies not meant for kids like Carrie?

So you can give the DVD copy to your buddy that hasn't made the jump to Blu Ray yet.

Well I lend the dvds out to my parents. They are still living in the dvd age.

We ALL still live in the dvd age. It merely shares space with blu-ray now instead of ruling the world.

I love it, I just sell them and put that money towards another blu-ray (especially vaulted Disney titles).

They are trying to adopt new Blu-ray owners so they can get the best of both worlds.

Combo packs FTW

to charge you extra. really. how many promote "Triple play -bluray, dvd and digital copy"? it is an excuse to charge more. I imagine the idea was to get people buying them so they would upgrade to a bluray player and have movies to watch. but it is kind of like the Playstation - put out the PS3 but still make new games in both PS2 and PS3 format and then complain when people buy the cheaper PS2 version. The real funny part for me is that with HD-DVD, they could put a dvd copy on the other side of the disk so it was a selling feature yet they didn't put dvd copies in with blurays then. it is a more modern thing. but i heard they are now able to put a dvd copy on the other side of the bluray disk so why the seperate copy?

Totally separate rant for this but why are the dvd copies so expensive on their own. If a dvd copy is $15 and the combo pack is $25, shouldn't the bluray only be $10? but if the bluray is what costs most of that $25, why is the dvd selling for $15? it is a money grab and you don't have much of a choice at times.

The average BD/DVD or BD/DVD/DC combo pack new release runs $19.99-24.99. I sell all included DVDs for at least a 1/3 of that cost on eBay unless it's a kids/family title that my children can use in the portable player. So in reality combo packs work out for me as I only end up paying about $10-15 for most of them after I sell the included DVD.

I use the DVDs to rip my own digital copies to carry on portable devices.

They are better than the "real" digital copies that are included - mine never expire and don't have any other restrictions on them.

What I don't understand is why the studios just don't drop DVD only packaging.

Just sell the BR/DVD combo packs.
