Being "fringe-y" is actually a help to a film as the Academy like to award indies. Winter's Bone, The Descendants, Midnight in Paris, A Separation, Beginners, Crazy Heart...

Yes, but they like to award them with individual sub-nominations instead of sweeps. (Bridges for Crazy, Woody for Paris, etc.)
Unless it's a ten-nomination year, and they think "Okay, what else was supposed to be nominated this year?"

Re: Silver Linings, Go see the film for yourself if you want an informed opinion on its quality. But then again I loved Little Miss Sunshine so...

....So you probably watch a lot of ABC series.
