In the world where directorial and film-festival names get promoted months before they open in theaters, and everyone keeps talking about them later because they're, y'know, supposed to. And they couldn't think of anything else at the end of October.

Which would be, um, this world, AaMoF.

Being "fringe-y" is actually a help to a film as the Academy like to award indies. Winter's Bone, The Descendants, Midnight in Paris, A Separation, Beginners, Crazy Heart...
Yes, but they like to award them with individual sub-nominations instead of sweeps. (Bridges for Crazy, Woody for Paris, etc.)
Unless it's a ten-nomination year, and they think "Okay, what else was supposed to be nominated this year?"

....So you probably watch a lot of ABC series.
