I also hope that anyone reading such "observations" take them with a grain of salt. Crappy SD broadcast and Bestbuy....enough said.

I don't think the 5010 is worth $1,000 more than the 5080.
However, you should be able to get Best Buy's price down to $3,299 on the PDP-5010, at which point it is definitely worth upgrading to the 1080p set.

At 50" and at 6-8ft viewing distance, there is definitely an advantage to the 1080p set if you're using it to watch a lot of Blu-ray discs.

Plus it correctly deinterlaces 1080i to 1080p for HD broadcasts.

If you're sitting 10ft away or more, perhaps go with the 5080.

You know, I wouldn't really throw out blanket statements like that. I think it should be on a case by case basis. The 5080 is a fine display, but SDE is still a major issue for me, even at 12 feet out. I wear glasses, so I see everything. It has to be 1080p or bust for me.

Hence the "perhaps"

It is 1080p Pioneer/Panasonic plasma or nothing for me personally.

I'd rather have a 768p PDP-5080FD Kuro though than any non-plasma 1080p set on the market.

Agreed.

A while ago, I was at a friends house and he had a Westinghouse 1080p LCD. He kept going on and on about how it had the best image he had ever seen. I saw it, and it was god awful. Gray blacks, artifacting, just a bad overall image. I didn't want to rain on the guys parade and tell him it wasn't that good, so I just let him enjoy his set, and that was all that mattered I guess. But it was vomit inducing. It had green blotches like last years Toshiba LCD's. I think many people just buy these displays because it says 1080p and nothing else. I'd gladly take a 1024x768 4280 over any of these cheap 1080p LCD's.

I agree with you especially after reading that Home Theater magazine shootout.
