Basically it means that the player doesn't decode these formats. However, through HDMI, you can send the information packets to a receiver for decoding (as long as the receiver has HDMI and can decode both formats) into sound. Players that decode internally take the packets and turn it into PCM and then send out over HDMI or Multi-channel.
