Default ? on hooking up a 2nd sub to Onk 805

Hello all, I have a spair Acoustic Research subwoofer collecting dust ever since I bought my Infinity PS-12 last year I was wondering if I could hook up the AR sub to my Onkyo 805 along with the PS-12 and if so,what would be the best way to do it? Thanks

get a "Y" rca cable with one male on one end and two females on the other. That is if the other sub your adding is self powered.

There's two ways: buy or make a Y cable to plug one end into your 805 and two cables, one for each sub. Or, if the subs have the facility, daisy chain them (go from one sub to the other). The former is likely to be better (why don't more receivers and pre/pros have two sub outputs?), but to be honest, I'd not do either because your subs don't match.

will the addition of the 2nd sub give me more bass? or do you think it might cut decrease the power, both subs are powered, I only want to do it if it will add more LFE.

Well, that's gonna be the fun part. 'TWEAKIN' Since you do have 2 different subs, you are gonna have to play with the settings.

I have 2 subs and I had to play with what I feel is just right.

Testing the sound with meters is the only way you're going to be able to run a dual-sub set-up and not have the soundwaves affect the rest of your system. I tried a dual sub set-up (just for fun, had no intentions of keeping the sub I was replacing in the room, because it's not nearly as musical or even on the same playing field with the one I got...) so I had a 15" and a 14" sub running, and while it was fun to throw U-571 in, and shake the walls, it really sounded terrible during the "in-between" scenes, like when something would fall, and "thump" but not have a continuous rumbling etc.... the sound just wouldn't match-up at the same time...... it was noticeable... the new sub was just a LOT faster, and carried a completely different sound. This was after playing with the setup for awhile and measuring it out with an SPL meter, but subs are tough to setup in general.

Don't do it!
Any pro will tell you that multiple subs in the same system should be iidentical. You will never be able to properly balance non-identical subs.

It's often thought that it's easier to set-up matching subs, and if they don't match, they should both be the same in quality, capabilities, ported/sealed, etc. but generally it's not said that you should "Never" have non-matching subs..... the front/rear of your room probably have completely different accoustics..... here's a good article on dual subs...

I don't really think this is 100% accurate.... You can get two subs very similar in performance, and by setting them up properly, you can make it work quite well. I don't think a low-power, 18" ported sub should be matched with a 10" Sealed 1000w sub though, that I agree, won't work.

I would assume you would need a LOT of space to justify a second subwoofer.

I have a fairly large space, and my Def Tech 14" reference series sub is capable of much larger space than I have, when I go to a dedicated home theater in the future, I hope it's large enough to accomodate the sub, or I'll probably have to down-grade to a smaller one.

Same thing I thought..... but nonetheless my old sub was defeating the purpose of my new one.... so it's in the basement now, so when my wife's little brother comes over, and goes into the basement to shoot pool, and connects his iPod to the stereo, my old 15" sub is VERY noticeable.... and I get the "Why don't you give those speakers away" talk!!! It's not my fault kids love the deep bass!!!! I would sell them, but they're not worth anything, and I like to have music for the few moments I spend down there......
