Why? because they charge sales TAX.

I'd rather just wait for Amazon when they start blowing them out at the end of the year since I have prime.

What a hassle sending out a mass email offering 50% OFF criterion only to login and see only a select few crap titles.
All depends where you're shipping to. Luckily I have the option of shipping to a little place in the US so I get free shipping and taxes don't bother me as they're attached to everything anyways.
As for the coupons, yes they cut off the online codes (cheap bastards) but I might just go down to Seattle with another friend that collects Criterion later this week (or month so I can nab the Zatoichi set and City lights too) and try and pressure a sales clerk into letting me use the coupons.
On top of that I also have a membership so that would at least be the extra 10% off.

Anyways, thanks for the heads up about the sales thread! I will try and find that now.

Picked up The Uninvited today. May grab a few more titles before the sale is done. Zatoichi set is really tempting too.

I just borrowed this one from the library last week and recently watched it. It was an extremely bizarre movie. It's not for everyone. I'd say it is an acquired taste (kind of like a John Waters movie is an acquired taste). I wouldn't say it sucks, but it sure isn't my cup of tea either.

The 10% off for members looks tempting (and coupons) - do you have to be a US resident to become a member?

No. You can be an international member but only U.S members get the 10% off. I don't think international members get any real benefit. So... It's kinda pointless. Can anyone share some insight as to if there are any benefits to being an international member?

Thought I'd ask on this thread as it's much busier than the UK Criterion thread...

Anybody made use of the $75 eCard offer? I've purchased $75, but the order has been stuck in 'processing' for about 8 hours. I paid using paypal. Anybody know how long this should take?

There are those that get it, and those that think it should be melted down into guitar picks. Those would be the ones that don't get it.

(Seriously, watch even ONE Japanese TV ad before viewing. They're all over YouTube, you shouldn't have any trouble.)

This "partnership" may really be a desperate decision by Criterion that none of us realize. No wonder Criterion started creating "dual editions" as they seem to be in a rough patch with making profits on both formats. Now with Sony making more executive decisions over Criterion, Sony might just consume Criterion and we're going to get an offshoot that was once formally known as "The Criterion Collection". But hopefully I'm wrong and I'm not a visionary here.

After all, none of us know what really goes on behind closed doors.

Even jw007 doesn't know if he was for real. But if he wasn't for real, well, he knows how to give a good laugh.

Just finished watching Blow Out on my DVR. I enjoyed it much more than Sisters, which I watched last week. I'm not a John Travolta fan, but I think his performance in Blow Out is impressive. I frequently thought about Blow-Up and The Conversation as I watched Blow Out. These 3 films would be an interesting triple feature.

I may purchase the following titles at B&N or Amazon this month:
Blow Out
The Gold Rush

Also, I'm considering blind buying the following titles:
The Spy Who Came In From The Cold
Seconds
Letter Never Sent
Lonesome
Branded to Kill
Please let me know if you think they are good/safe blind buys, or which one you would pick if you could only buy one.

I'm glad I own (and finally got around to watching) Branded to Kill but I wouldn't put it in the safe blind buy category either.

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Letter Never Sent and Seconds are all pretty safe and coincidentally enough that's probably the order I would put them in - very safe, solidly safe, reasonably safe.

I haven't watched Lonesome yet so I can't comment.

Unlike most, I haven't received any 15 or 20% off coupons via snail mail. Am I not a good enough customer?

Do the $5 and $8 coupons still exist for this sale?

Get the Blow Out disc if you liked the movie. The extras are great.

The extras are great. I particularly like during the interview with De Palma, the interviewer asks De Palma like 3 times if he thought Blow Up was a great movie. All De Palma could say was "it had an interesting aspect"...that is when he even answered him, I'm guessing I know what aspect of the film he is referring too ....De Palma was all like "Now The Red Shoes...that's a great film". De Palma's the man!
