April 2014 50 Movie Challenge - Favorites

Watched the first one that isn't on my list.

Was very good, but not great. 4/5

Watched the 3D with the wife tonight, will watch the 2D with the kid tomorrow. I gave her the magnets that came with it, she liked them for about 2 minutes.

Yeah...the prequels don't hold up as well, but I still love Ep 3. Watching the OT with the commentaries on for a change. Will probably tackle Eps 5 and 6 tomorrow and Thursday.

First watch of this movie I thought it was just okay, maybe a little too much singing, but after watching it multiple times with my little girl it has won me over. I love how excited she gets watching it. It was worth the purchase.

Sucks that I don't own this but it just hasn't hit the right price for me. Definitely some of my Top 50 along with LOTR but I'm not paying over $40 for the set, although the price may never happen. I might have to rent these from the library and watch them this month.

Gaboman said the pretty much same thing to me.....but I don't trust him!

Wanted to watch it last night with Michelle (3 years old) but we watched a Dora the Explorer DVD again for the 674th time. I told her I bought the movie for her, say that for all the animation; hoping she'll want to watch it and give Dora A rest.

Watched one more favorite (Speed), one I really enjoy but not Top 50 (Oscar), and one really awful movie with some of the worst acting I have ever seen (In the Blood).

I seem to be alternating movies from my Favorites list with random watches. LOL

Watched Frozen 2D with the kid yesterday. Was good, but still 4/5. No movie today....probably none tomorrow either.

Finished the Star Wars marathon, yaaaayyyyy. Since I've seen these movies a billion times, I watched them with the commentary on; there's a few informative bits in there, but I felt it was a bit dry.

My next greatest rental is:



It's alright...definitely won't be calling it a top 50 favorite.

It was a day one purchase for me. I don't even remember what I paid, probably $60 or more. For my second-favorite saga, I felt it was money well spent (especially since I've seen the whole thing at least twice now). Most of the movies are in good quality, and there are plenty of decent extras (including some smashing deleted scenes). Still keeping my DVDs though, for even more extras and to have the older cuts.

What's your first favorite saga?

Star Wars is also my second. First is The Godfather, parts 1 and 2 are in my top 10.

I am one of those crybabies that hates the extra footage and changes in sounds and music. Hung on to my SE DVDs with the window boxed theatrical cuts. But, after I got my projector and blew them up to fit the screen, I could almost not enjoy it. Picked up the SteelBook from the UK of the originals, cheap-ish; glad I did....but still an annoyed fanboy!

Peter Jackson's Middle-Earth saga (primarily LOTR, but I enjoy The Hobbit as well; the padding in that doesn't bother me nearly as much as it seems to bother everyone else).

I was starting to worry that LOTR was wearing thin on me, that it might be too long and dry, but this time around I enjoyed it just as much as before, and I find that the way it's made, with so much real-looking practical effects and camera work, keeps it looking consistently fresh and real, so I don't think it'll ever get old with me.

In another year or two, I'll plan on recalculating my top 100 list. I think everything's going to shift down, as I name Koyaanisqatsi as my new #1 favorite. But as far as franchises go, LOTR will probably still be #1.

LOTR, Star Wars, The Matrix, and The Dark Knight comprise a holy quadrinity for me, because I love all the films in each series. Indiana Jones could almost be a fifth one.

Didn't think I liked The Godfather much at first, but last time I saw the first film I realized that it is really great.

I think the only Star Wars change I wound up hating was the altered Obi-Wan dragon howl. I can handle most of the other changes. I'm not that much of a crybaby.

Can't wait for Episode VII though. I kinda wonder if another Blu-Ray edition will pop up now that Disney and other people are involved with the series.

LOTR is great.....probably should put it on my list. Forked over the cash for the extended editions on DVD and BD as soon as I could.

Rethinking my list as I get through a few. Realized I left out Dune. Also thinking so e that I waited for sakes, or wasn't willing to pay Criterion prices may not belong. Also, some like The Terminator, that I have bought and replaced with each new edition need to be there.

Took away To Kill a Mockingbird and The Grapes of Wrath. Great flicks, but not sure I'd pay $30 for them, or buy Day 1. Adding The Terminator and Star Trek II. Have owned them on VHS, DVD, and both in BD twice.

Looking forward to the remaster, but wish it was the theatrical. The parts with really old Eastwood and Wallach voicing the old footage of their younger selves sounds terrible. There is enough print damage in this that a remaster was necessary.

This weekend, wound up watching:



Dang, forgot how awesome this is. I really should be a top 50 movie, but for some odd reason I wasn't into it last time I saw it. Will probably change that in the future; the film holds up well, has a heck of a style, and is one heck of a trip.



Was a blind-buy; pretty decent thriller with that distinctive Michael Mann vibe.



This is the one top 50 favorite I watched. Still pretty funny, charming, emotional, and visually impressive. Might slide off of my future top 50, but it's still good.

A bit of a concert video, a bit of a documentary, kinda like The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter, but in the Middle East with a bunch of guys playing on drums and weird stringed instruments. It's alright.

How was 47 Ronin? I thought it looked pretty good from the previews. Worth a buy?
