The Yamaha RX-V3800 uses PCM1791A DAC's, which have 113 dB of dynamic range and are capable of DSD conversion and PCM at 24/192. The Denon 4308CI and Yammy RX-V1800 also use this DAC.
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folder.../pcm1791a.html

(The links are mostly to Texas Instruments, because that's who owns Burr Brown now)

The Yamaha RX-Z9 uses a far better DAC than the 3800, the DSD1792, which is capable of 132 dB of dynamic range and DSD to analog conversion and PCM at 24/192. It doesn't support TrueHD or dts-ma though.
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folder...t/dsd1792.html

This is the ONLY Yamaha receiver with this DAC.

The Yamaha RX-Z11, Onkyo 805, 875 and 905 use the PCM1796 DAC, which has dynamic range of 123 dB and of course DSD to analog and 24/192 PCM. The Denon 5308CI also employs this DAC.
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folder...t/pcm1796.html

To summarize:

Code:
Burr-Brown PCM1791A 113dB SNR $ 3.00/ea Yamaha RX-V3800, Yamaha RX-V1800, Denon 3808, 4308 and DVD-2930CI
Burr-Brown PCM1796 123dB SNR $ 6.50/ea Yamaha RX-Z11, Onkyo 805/875/905, Denon 5308 and DVD-3930CI
Burr-Brown PCM1792A 127dB SNR $13.00/ea ?
Burr-Brown PCM1792 132dB SNR $13.65/ea Yamaha RX-Z9, Denon 5805ci and DVD-5910
Sure if the components surrounding the PCM1792 chip are crap then you're going to get crap out, but usually this is not the case. It's important to know that the majority of DAC's support 24/192 right now and also Burr Brown is not the best name in DAC's either. The new $7,000 flagship Pioneer Elite receiver for example, the SC-09TXH, uses Wolfson DAC's.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.ca/POC...ivers/SC-09TXH

I hope this helps a little for you and others to understand DAC's a little better. When someone is considering Blu-ray or Super Audio CD, where dynamic range can play an important part in your overall listening enjoyment, getting deeper into DAC's and how they work is important. Super Audio CD has a dynamic range of 120 dB, so why would you want to get a DAC with only 113 dB dynamic range if SACD is important?
Did you get a spec sheet from Yamaha yet as to which DAC's the RX-V663 is using? I did a side by side comparison of it and the $5000.00+ unit that they're selling and for the money the RX-V663 is a great buy. I would still like to know which DAC's they are using though.

Would it make sense to find a player that would bitstream to the 663 for decoding or just let player do the decoding? Probably depends on the player, huh? I guess i'm struggling with the choice of putting alot of money into a player that does all the heavy lifting or spending big money on a top of the line receiver and just buy a player that bitsteams.

Really curious to hear what some of our trusted tech vets have to say on this topic or please direct me to another thread where this is covered in depth.

If you already have a receiver that decodes all the various codecs I'd probably just get a player that bitstreams. The only cheap solution right now for getting a BD player to decode all the audio formats is the PS3. Of course there are more players coming soon like the Panasonic BD-50 that will decode and bitstream everything. For the average home theater there should be no difference in audio quality between bitstreaming and decoding within the player.

If anyone is a flavor of the month it's probably the Onkyo. I mean Yamaha has been making audio/music related equipment for a long time. If you're gonna trash the Yamaha then give some reasons or personal experience.

Hi,

I don't know if it's mentioned here yet (didn't read the whole thread) but the Yamaha AVR's Clip blacker than Black and peak whites.

In other words they output video to proper specs but most other AVRs pass expanded info below black and above white.

I bought one brand new last week from 6ave.com for $370 shipped. On their website, they have a pricegrabber link, and they beat the lowest price (from a reputable seller). You just have to give them a call.

Thanks Brian for the info. I just read an AVR review in Home Theater Mag which included 2 high-end Yamahas, 2 Denons and a Sony. And all passed the video clipping test except the Yamahas. So what does this mean in the real world? With the Yamahas clipping blacker than black and above white, will users really notice it while watching a movie and not test patterns?

Are you for real , just great. Is not enought that it only has two HDMI, i was willing to compromise there, but now is messing with the video side of the equation too? I guess i will be looking around some more.

Bump. I'm almost ready to buy the Yamaha V663, but concerned now with the video clipping. Can any current owners chime in? Or experts to tell us that it's not a big deal...maybe? Thx!

I have the V663 for about 3 months now and I haven't had any problems with it.
My S300 is connected by HDMI to the receiver and then HDMI to the the TV and I haven't seen any difference with the black scenes at all.

I am not running my cable box thru the receiver for picture so I can't comment on that I am just using optical for the sound.

Its a solid built receiver with too many features that you might not use at all.

You couldn't be more wrong! The only difference between the RV and HTR series is how Yamaha chooses to market them to different retailers. You'll find the RV series in higher end audio shops (and online as well). The HTR's are sold mostly throught the big box stores, like Future Shop and Best Buy here in Canada.

My Yamaha HTR-6190 is the same unit as the RV-1800....

The Pioneer Elite is in fact a higher -end product to that of their regular consumer line.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. But this is what I have been told be several people.

No, don't you be stupid, you tool. You have no basis for your comment, and it clearly shows you know nothing about Yamaha, their history, or their products. If you cannot contribute anything positive, leave well enough alone.

Say, do you even have a clue as to what the Yamaha symbol is or stands for?
