Why did Tom Cruise stop doing good movies?

Apparently the consensus is that he still makes good movies. Ok, but they aren't as good as they used to be.

He used to be in movies filled with symbolism, allegories, and ideology. Movies that actually were good.

Top Gun
Rain Man
A Few Good Men
Risky Business
Eyes Wide Shut
Jerry Maguire
Mission: Impossible*
Minority Report

And then there was the mindless action [not as good movies]

Mission: Impossible II
Mission: Impossible III
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Jack Reacher

What the heck happened to him? He went from doing good movies, to doing pure [not as good].

*The only M:I movie that was good...

I enjoy the occasional mindless action flick. It's just that when you see a great actor that used to be in great roles, lower himself to (what I'd consider) junk, you have to wonder why he chose to go down that road.

I do watch junky movies from time to time, I even own some on DVD
