Default Why did Tom Cruise stop doing good movies?

Apparently the consensus is that he still makes good movies. Ok, but they aren't as good as they used to be.

He used to be in movies filled with symbolism, allegories, and ideology. Movies that actually were good.

Top Gun
Rain Man
A Few Good Men
Risky Business
Eyes Wide Shut
Jerry Maguire
Mission: Impossible*
Minority Report

And then there was the mindless action [not as good movies]

Mission: Impossible II
Mission: Impossible III
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Jack Reacher

What the heck happened to him? He went from doing good movies, to doing pure [not as good].

*The only M:I movie that was good...

I do watch junky movies from time to time, I even own some on DVD

You forgot Magnolia on good movies.

Also, Mission Impossible II is one of the greatest action films ever made!

I completely disagree.

He used to make good movies (Top Gun, Few Good Men, Minority Report, etc) AND bad ones (Vanilla Sky, Eyes Wide Shut, MI2, others...)

and now he STILL makes good movies (MI3, MI4, Jack Reacher, Oblivion... all great ...and Edge of Tomorrow looks excellent as well)

in fact, he's only made two movies in the last 10 years that I wouldn't consider good - Lions for Lambs and Valkyrie, neither of which was terrible.

Yup. He's never stopped making good movies in my opinion. Jack Reacher wasn't even an action movie, more of a thriller, and a great one at that. Oblivion was great, Edge of Tomorrow looks great, all the M:I movies are good, hell even his role in Rock of Ages was good. He's just a great actor.

You put Eyes Wide Shut in the "bad" category?

But the film had tons of symbolism in it.

What a bunch of nonsense

My favorite movie of 2013 was Oblivion.

A bad movie can have symbolism.

He was awesome in Tropic Thunder. I also enjoyed him in Rock Of Ages but haven't seen any of his Action movies lately so I can't comment on them

It's because his star power has faded since the mid 90s.

Are you the next OnlyTrueFilmFan?

Oblivion was fun as hell. EoT looks like good sci-fi cheese.

Ghost Protocol was awesome. And he's always great in every one of his movies.

Sorry to say, but Oblivion was mediocre as hell, and that's me complimenting it. Besides the visuals, it was rather overrated.

Based off the trailers for Edge of Tomorrow, it looks like it COULD be another great Sci-fi film for Cruise, but Emily Blunt looks like she's the one that'll bring the movie down, and I love Emily Blunt.

In the past decade, only Collateral, War of the Worlds, MI:GP, and to an extent, Jack Reacher have impressed me.

Collateral is one of his weakest movies for me.

Mission Impossible III and IV were the best films in the series, and certainly among the finest of Tom Cruises' blockbuster flicks. Collateral is the best film he ever made. Tropic Thunder was also solid. So that's four terrific films over the past 10 years... that's pretty impressive by any standards.

And it's not like the rest of his films were duds. The Last Samurai, War of the Worlds, Valkyrie, Jack Reacher and Oblivion were decent if unspectacular films. The only bad movies he's made over the past 10 years were Rock of Ages and Knight & Day.

Top Gun is so horribly overrated and is easily the most mindless of any of the movies the OP mentioned, or really of any movies Cruise has stared in.
And Ghost Protocol is ten times better than the first Mission Impossible. I still like the first movie, but the script is so messy and convoluted.

It's a movie about redemption.
