Surge Protector - Blu-ray Forum

I was wondering how important it is to have a good surge protector? I have a 60gb ps3, 40" samsung and a laptop on a regular surge protector. Should I buy an expensive one or not? Thanks!!

The basic answer is that yes if you get something like a furman its worth it.

Yes. Definitely. You don't necessarily need to buy an expensive one, as long as it is good and comes with a strong guarantee. I had a power surge hit my neighborhood due to a meth head car chase knocking down a power pole. Most of my neighbors lost appliances or gear, and one neighbor lost over $20k worth of home theater gear.

I have Monster power conditioners protecting my home theater room and my 2 channel listening room, and all my gear was fine. Well, I did lose an Onkyo DVD player, but it was the only thing connected to a cheapie surge protector.

Good surge protectors are definitely worth the investment. Do a search for surge protectors or power conditioners on this site, and you'll quickly find a number of good options.

And if you have frequent power outages (or even infrequent), looks into a UPS... I have two of them feeding my system. Think last year my subwoofer suffered from a nearby lightning hit (and/or the subsequent power outage). Killed it dead.
