They all went bankrupt and closed because people started using other services like Netflix streaming and such. Darn it!!
So thats why there have been record sales recently for blu ray on black friday and christmas weeks and big titles having record sales as well like Frozen, Hunger Games, Twilight ect.. on blu ray because kids or adults don't buy them

Also, we lived in an era before the advent of home video, when it was near impossible to own your own media and music was far more expensive if you equalize for inflation, so we placed a greater value upon it.
I'm all for waxing nostalgic but do you really think people gobbled up Three's Company DVDs or Bananarama CDs at higher rates than they're buying Breaking Bad or Adele because tv and music were so much better back in the good old days?

Aren't you kind of ignoring the 800lb gorilla here?

One of the big reasons tapes and discs were more popular in Ye Olden Tymes is that our primitive tvs and radios were unable to play whatever we wanted whenever we wanted to play it. Even after the advent of home video there were no video on demand or streaming options and there were fewer broadcast/cable channels.

Physical media was never the only game in town but there are more players than ever now.

And to be honest, some of them are pretty cool.

The need to collect is a strong one that will stay regardless. All these blogs and so on are utter bull. I remember a while back some blog stating that ipads and tablets in general will take over the pc industry completely by 2020. It's 2014 and already tablet sales are slowing. People just jump on the bandwagon and peddle all this crap when in fact digital sales will probably never match bluray numbers let alone dvd. The industry isn't going to be happy with a streaming subscription or nothing scenario and there will be several more attempts to persuade people to collect in the future. The only way that will happen is with a psychical item.

Anyone who thinks anything is going to take over from anything has lost it, to be honest. All we have is more choice. Some people will always try to make it seem as though their choice is the one that its inevitable that everyone else will go along with it which is nonsense; a lot of the time I put it down to ego 'I do this, it works for me, thus it'll work for everyone ever'. Everyone does different stuff at different times.

Tonight I'm streaming Breaking Bad on Netflix for the second time around, I have the box set on my shelf to keep for when it goes from Netflix, I can't wait for the Tati / Herzog / Night Breed discs which are coming soon, I have bought two albums today on vinyl by the Sleaford Mods, I also bought the Manics new album on vinyl and have been listening to the free MP3 I got of it while I wait for it to arrive. This is all good. We've never had it so good.

Well, "more choice" for you and I, because we lived and grew up with physical media, and are also here for the streaming/online/not physical entertainment. So thats great for us now, today.

Dont forget, we have a connection to physical media. A connection to it that the children being born today might not have in the year 2034 when they're 20 years old. You try getting into discs when you're raised in a society where everything is "download this", "smartphone that", "laptop, portable, tablet blah blah blah..."

It must of just been me, but you seemed to rejoice in the possibility that there will be no optical media in the future. Or maybe you were excited because someone agrees with you. Either way, I could be wrong, and it is just my opinion, but you seemed very pleased about it.

So where will we be in 20 years time? A niche. So what? If you're asking me to worry about what's going to happen in 40, 60 or 80 years time, I'm afraid I can't be bothered.

He, IMO, is predicting the end of optical media and big screen entertainment. Hopefully not in my lifetime lol.
Something that potentially could be a direct result of streaming tech and opening up options of portable media. I have warned of that very possibility for a while now.

In the future, streaming=portable mobile devices with SD picture quality.

Person that needs to calm down,

I was responding to your (you, yes you) remark about "choice".
In one way, you're 100000% correct. We do have choice. You do. I do. Kim Kardashian and her disgusting thighs does...etc. We are lucky to have physical and non physical options.
But if you're not Stevie Wonder, you can see that the world is rapidly changing. And because of said changing, Im afraid the children today that become the economy driving adults of 2034 may be surrounded by different "choices". Especially if they grow up in a world where, again, the emphasis is on smartphones, tablets, downloading, the cloud...etc

So it has NOTHING to do with whether you can be "bothered or not"

Look bud, you misunderstood everything i was saying i think or maybe i wasnt making myself clear enough. I collect physical media and i sure as hell never want it to go away. If it were up to me, optical discs would be around forever. Unfortunately, i dont call the shots and as long as these stupid video on demand sites keep popping up im worried that it wont be around forever. That was all i was trying to say. Somehow, something was lost in translation i believe. Im sure not a streaming fanboy or whatever you called me. Thats for certain.

I'm in no way predicting the "end of large screen entertainment". You can already get (and will continue to get) that from your cable provider on demand, premium channels, smartTVs, Amazon instant video, Netflix streaming or any set top streaming online box OTHER THAN a disc based player.

So you are suggesting that big screen entertainment will disappear? That's what I take from all this streaming crap, that's the ultimate threat.

Oops, you posted same time as me lol.

It was just that you neglected to mention tv or monitor when you listed smartphones/tablets/downloads etc..

Whoa, patronising much? Stevie Wonder? What? I'm not even going to bother to respond to this apart from to say do you think the adults of 2034 will be the ones watching all those Frozen blurays now or not?

Yes. I did forget to mention large screen TV (via OnDemand, Cable, TV apps such as Netflix and Amazon). Thats here to stay.

I wish it wasn't the case. I lllllove my blu-ray. I'm from the generation that grew up witnessing VHS evolve to blu-ray. But I feel the humans being born today will be so indoctrinated with nonphysical media, that they won't be like us.

I think, when we are all dead (us members in here), physical media will be as well. So, by 2070.
