Aren't you kind of ignoring the 800lb gorilla here? One of the big reasons tapes and discs were more popular in Ye Olden Tymes is that our primitive tvs and radios were unable to play whatever we wanted whenever we wanted to play it. Even after the advent of home video there were no video on demand or streaming options and there were fewer broadcast/cable channels. Physical media was never the only game in town but there are more players than ever now. And to be honest, some of them are pretty cool. |

The need to collect is a strong one that will stay regardless. All these blogs and so on are utter bull. I remember a while back some blog stating that ipads and tablets in general will take over the pc industry completely by 2020. It's 2014 and already tablet sales are slowing. People just jump on the bandwagon and peddle all this crap when in fact digital sales will probably never match bluray numbers let alone dvd. The industry isn't going to be happy with a streaming subscription or nothing scenario and there will be several more attempts to persuade people to collect in the future. The only way that will happen is with a psychical item.

Tonight I'm streaming Breaking Bad on Netflix for the second time around, I have the box set on my shelf to keep for when it goes from Netflix, I can't wait for the Tati / Herzog / Night Breed discs which are coming soon, I have bought two albums today on vinyl by the Sleaford Mods, I also bought the Manics new album on vinyl and have been listening to the free MP3 I got of it while I wait for it to arrive. This is all good. We've never had it so good. |

Dont forget, we have a connection to physical media. A connection to it that the children being born today might not have in the year 2034 when they're 20 years old. You try getting into discs when you're raised in a society where everything is "download this", "smartphone that", "laptop, portable, tablet blah blah blah..." |

It must of just been me, but you seemed to rejoice in the possibility that there will be no optical media in the future. Or maybe you were excited because someone agrees with you. Either way, I could be wrong, and it is just my opinion, but you seemed very pleased about it.

Something that potentially could be a direct result of streaming tech and opening up options of portable media. I have warned of that very possibility for a while now. In the future, streaming=portable mobile devices with SD picture quality. Last edited by Steedeel; 07-17-2014 at 07:47 PM. |

I was responding to your (you, yes you) remark about "choice". In one way, you're 100000% correct. We do have choice. You do. I do. Kim Kardashian and her disgusting thighs does...etc. We are lucky to have physical and non physical options. But if you're not Stevie Wonder, you can see that the world is rapidly changing. And because of said changing, Im afraid the children today that become the economy driving adults of 2034 may be surrounded by different "choices". Especially if they grow up in a world where, again, the emphasis is on smartphones, tablets, downloading, the cloud...etc So it has NOTHING to do with whether you can be "bothered or not" |

I wish it wasn't the case. I lllllove my blu-ray. I'm from the generation that grew up witnessing VHS evolve to blu-ray. But I feel the humans being born today will be so indoctrinated with nonphysical media, that they won't be like us. I think, when we are all dead (us members in here), physical media will be as well. So, by 2070. . Last edited by eiknarf; 07-17-2014 at 08:09 PM. |
