Anyway, this thread is about the new film, so the constant whining should at least be contained in the Saga Blu-ray thread in the North American forum.

God, not a big fan of this Kaminski guy. Had many arguments over the years about the trilogy.

My prediction is that this will become run, jump and shoot Star Wars much like what Abrams did to Star Trek. It will be a huge, huge hit especially with the Man Of Steel and Star Trek reboot crowd. I wonder how many planets Abrams will blow up in this movie?

lets just hope the villain isn't Darth Vader... have him be called something else the entire film and then halfway through he looks at the screen and says "My name is....Darth Vader!!"

That's what I want to know.

Lucas has been adamant on this point FOREVER.
Because he's never ever changed his mind before has he ? No wait was it 6 films, 9 films, no 6...? So the Special Editions are your preferred versions ? No wait is it the 2004 DVDs, is it the BluRays ??

The thing I absolutely don't get about Lucas on this, regardless of his preferred version is his lack of recognition as to the status of the original film as a classic, a cultural landmark, worth preserving as it stands. Even more so than the rest of the trilogy. He's argued before about preserving films of importance yet he can't even see the same within his own work ?? And yes we have it on DVD in poor quality ? Whats the point in preserving a cultural landmark if they aren't preserved in the best quality and made available ? His preferred version is out there...

And I say this as someone who has no particular problem watching the Special Editions - I quite enjoy some of the changes, some not so, but I certainly don't let it spoil my annual viewing.

Most of the 'Lucas had softened' speculation arises from a quote he gave the New York Times when the Complete Saga BDs were announced.

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/08/14/star-wars-films-coming-to-blu-ray-next-year/

[Show spoiler]
Quote:
Mr. Lucas said the versions of the first three “Star Wars” films — “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” — included in the Blu-ray boxed set will be the special-edition releases that were shown theatrically in 1997 and digitally restored for a 2004 standard-definition DVD boxed set.

Perhaps bracing for the reactions of fans who decried some of the changes made to the special-edition films — like, say, an exchange of gunfire between Han Solo and a certain green-skinned bounty hunter — Mr. Lucas said that to release the original versions of these films on Blu-ray was “kind of an oxymoron, because the quality of the original is not very good.”

“You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally,” he added. “It’s a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version.”

And while some viewers might want the “Star Wars” Blu-ray release in time for this year’s Life Day — that is, the Wookiee holiday that roughly coincides with the start of the holiday shopping season — Mr. Lucas said a 2011 release was the earliest possible date. (The boxed set will be distributed by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment; Lucasfilm did not give pricing information or indicate if the films will also be sold individually.)

That, he said, resulted partly from continuing work on the additional Blu-ray features and partly from factors beyond his control.

“We’ve been working on them for quite a while,” Mr. Lucas said, “but still, there are pipelines. Unfortunately, the recent releases get priority over what we call the classic versions of things.”

Specifically, that list bit about the recent releases getting priority over the classic versions. That suggested to a lot of people that the classic versions were at least in the works.

Hell, just calling them the classic versions instead of the unfinished versions or the rough cuts or the 'shitty versions I don't like anymore' was encouraging.

In any event, it's not really up to him anymore anyway.

edit: I'm having trouble with the various links - google 'Goerge Lucas "classic versions"' and poke around if you want confirmation or text of the full Times article

And then every man, woman and child in the theater will look at each other and then yell out "NO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

The difference is the style of the Trek reboot would actually work with Star Wars. Abrams basically made a Star Wars movie called Star Trek. Now he's on the right franchise and one that fits his style. I expect a good Star Wars style movie, even if it fails to capture the magic of the originals (as sequels 99% of the time fail to do).

Yep ever since the Marvel buyout it's been this never ending cycle accusations of how Disney will ruin everything despite evidence pointing to the contrary.

So basically you are saying he will ruin Star Wars. I want to see him turn back the clock and tone down the special effects. The only way to make it original now would be to let the story drive the films and not the effects

Here we go...

If Abrams puts half as much heart and soul into Episode VII as he did with Super 8 and Star Trek, the film will be on par with the original trilogy. So many of you seem to think Lucas already "ruined" Star Wars, so it's not like Abrams can do worse. We're still well over a year out. Give him a chance and see some footage before you decide he has ruined it...

Actually Fox still owns the distribution rights in all media and theatrical formats in perpetuity and the rest of the Original Trilogy and prequel Trilogy till 2020
Seriously doubt they are going to hand them over to Disney for any amount of money. Especially when they know next years release of Episode VII is going to make the first 6 movies even more valuable again.

Given all the practical effects and camera tricks Abrams used for Trek, I'd take his special effects work over most other directors any day.

I think it will take a little more to be "on par" with the original trilogy. I expect him to crank out a decent, fun film (I do not think he will "ruin" anything) but it will take a lot more that "half" his Super 8 and Star Trek efforts for him to recapture the magic of the original trilogy.

The big mistake right now is everyone hoping for him to "capture the magic of the OT". He can't. Nobody can. Not even Lucas himself could do it and he had three cracks at it. JJ just has to leave his own mark on Star Wars and do things his way.

The good thing about JJ is that he is a SW fan from childhood so he's gonna care about what he dishes out. I really do think he'll give SW fans the film they've been waiting for. I mean you only have to think about the spoilers we've seen so far....
[Show spoiler]the falcon, x-wing, stormtroopers, Luke, Leia, Han

Very classy.

It is because of people like you, why some people wish there will never be a release of the UOT.
