Nothing is free.
It costs them to replicate the disc, silk screen or print on the DVD, and insert the disc (be it manually or by machine).

New Release BDs aren't cheaper when they don't include DVDs.

Yep, Sony and Disney have been releasing plenty of new titles with only the BD and UV, but the price is no cheaper than when they include the DVD as well.

Heck, a couple of BD-only releases from Anchor Bay actually cost more than their BD/DVD counterparts.

I noticed they did DVD only and BD only with Snowpiercer. The BD (2 BDs) was only $14.96.

During their Release Weeks, the BD/DVD combo packs of Lee Daniels' The Butler and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom were $5 cheaper than the BD-only versions.

Probably the cost associated with offering multiple versions. I don't expect combs with DVDs to disappear until DVDs stop outselling Blu-rays, which may be never at this rate. We have vehicle DVD systems and it saves us cost for movies we want to take with us, both kid and adult movies. Plus I have a relative who doesn't have Blu-ray player and give him the DVD. And with DVDs vastly outselling Blu-rays, I expect a portion of the sales of these combo packs are for those anticipating upgrading in the future.

Yikes, normally the Blu-ray Tech/Advanced Tech forum is running at a slower pace compared to something like the ‘Movies’ forum. Whaz-up?, did everyone take a vacation /sick day off from work all at the same time or is everyone on their 6th shot of DynaPep?

I’m getting dizzy here this morning trying to keep up.

Wow, it's been a long time (almost 20 years) since I've heard that name.

Bought my first computer at Lechmere's in Florida in the mid-late 80s, 8088 clone with 40mb HD, partitioned. It was like $1500 with a crappy 4 color monitor and 24 pin Panasonic dot matrix printer. That's over $3000 adjusted for inflation.

What sucks is that everyone is going to be saying the same thing about blu-ray in about 3 to 5 years. 'Why do we keep getting these blu-ray discs with the 4k blu' 'I'm buying a 4k blu-ray, I don't need the blu-ray with it. I don't watch it and it makes the price stay inflated'. Its just natural progression.

You're underestimating the average person. Most won't move past DVD because it's the cheaper option. Do you really think the majority will move to 4K BD? If anything those same individuals will move to BD if DVD becomes obsolete, rather than 4K BD, because BD would then be the cheaper option.

I got my first computer in Lechmere in 1981. The Texas Instruments TI-99/4A

This was state of the art at the time, with a 3.0 MHz processor, 16 KB of RAM (expandable via a 32 KB cartridge) and absolutely no harddrive (that's what the cassette tape drive was for). I got it at the age of 11, read every book written on it (a lot), and was programming it proficiently by the age of 13.

I was referring to us mainly, people on this site and on this very thread actually. The average person would never skip over blu-ray to get to 4k blu-ray if DVDs seized to exist, I know this. Hell, if DVD dropped off the planet they probably would move to streaming vs another physical medium which is the sad part.

I needed mine for college. It had a Turbo mode, 11MHz, lol. I did get games for it, spent a lot of time playing Harpoon. Didn't get a replacement until 1995 when I got a Pentium 75 based computer. Been doing laptops for the past decade. My first laptop was an old, used Compaq off eBay.

So did this thread go from wondering why we have to have DVD's in our blu-ray to now loving that we're getting DVDs with our blu-ray? What the fffffffffuu%& is happening here?

I'm here to support the O.P.. That means we make fun of DVD, no matter if they stuff it in the amaray case for "free" or not.

Naaaahhh you're right. Let's keep DVD alive. F%&k blu-ray
