Also, how is Interstellar losing when it is #5 at IMDB and Big Hero 6 is #57?
IMDB rankings are complete bullshit. They mean nothing.

I think Interstellar is one of the best films I've seen in a long time. I have zero interest in seeing Big Hero 6 (it's just not my sort of movie).

That being said, it's not sad. It makes sense that a film aimed at kids that's a full hour shorter than Interstellar, and getting good reviews is doing quite well. At my nearly sold-out IMAX showing (there were like 3-4 empty seats), I think the youngest kid I saw there looked to be about 12.

Interstellar is going to be a tough slog for your typical 8 year-old.

And, let's face it: After the pathetic, sad weekend that was Halloween weekend at the box office, both the studios and the theaters can use a weekend with two big films. So, no matter how it turns out everyone wins:

The filmmakers made a ton.

The theaters had mostly full theaters all weekend.

And people with differing tastes and of different ages got to see something they enjoyed.

It's all a win-win.

I see IMDB only matters to some people when it benefits them.

IMDB is like any self-selecting poll: It's meaningless. Polling is a very complicated, statistical series of methods. People clicking a button on IMDB (who knows how many times) is not that.

I should remember this more often. Hell, I only had it drilled into my head by my critical reading professor.

Unfortunately, most people think that actual, mathematics-based polls and self-selecting polls are equally valid.

I don't really put much stock in anecdotal post-movie audience reaction: FWIW, in 25+ years of movie-going, I have never witnessed an audience cheer or applaud a movie en masse.

I've never been in a theater that had people cheering or applauding after a movie. I prefer it that way too.

People are mad that Interstellar isn't doing a $100+ Million dollar weekend and that it's getting beat by a Marvel/Disney movie?

This is fall and that is when Disney usually does best with it's releases. It's colder/days are shorter so families are going to the movies and kids wanna see Baymax not a Nolan epic. I personally would have loved to been able to see Interstellar this weekend but I didn't have the option cause my theater didn't get it, I plan on taking the kids to see Big Hero 6 around thanksgiving to avoid the packed houses that they have right now. I think Interstellar will do fine with overseas included (look at how well Pacific Rim did) and it losing to a pretty good looking Disney/Marvel film isn't the end of the movie going world.

Me neither. I may have experienced one or two people clapping or so, but that's the extent of it.

Same here. It is a movie, not a live theater, there is a time and a place for applause.

I've heard plenty of applause before, mostly for the big blockbuster films, but it was mostly light. I don't think I've seen audiences erupt into raucous applause before though

I will wait for free DVD rental from red box .
Kids movies like this are way better at home imo.

Kudos to Nolan for never putting out a hollow dumbed down film.

Among other times that this has happened in my experience, the one that stands out is when I saw The Dark Knight in a packed IMAX theater. The second the film ended, the crown went totally nuts.

How can you call it that without having seen it already.

Most of my sold out first showing of Interstellar did applaud after, but I agree that I've never understood the use of it. It's one thing if someone is there who made the film or was apart of it, but when they are not, it doesn't make much sense. Heck, I don't even clap when I watch a sports game on tv I am passionate about, though I understand that is something very different.

I've been to plenty of showings with applause though. If you never experience it, then clearly you haven't been to any night before release day showings.
