An update from Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise reveals a casting call for the Apple production via a Google form, which discloses a seven-month shoot from February to September 2021 is being planned under the working title Gray Horse, a reference to the real-life community depicted in Grann’s book. They also reveal that Apple has rented out 55,000 square feet of a building in Osage County for production.
This is one of my favorite books of the last decade, but if Scorsese doesn't bring that budget down, I'd prefer it just not get made.
And if anyone else has read Grann's book, it's a $60M-$75M concept.

The thing is, I'm finding it hard to accept De Niro as Hale, and just a little bit less difficult to envision DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, and while there is no question Scorsese has the ability and credentials, my preference would have been for another director to tackle the book.

I guess you haven't read the book, but basically DiCaprio is suggesting that Apple spend $200M for a $60M-$75M concept and rewrite the screenplay to result in a $25M film.

Roth originally adapted David Grann’s book of the same name for the project. Based the screenwriter’s “Script Notes” podcast interview, it appears the “Flower Moon” version going into production in 2021 will only be 50 percent of the original vision he had in store for the movie.

While Scorsese has had his deal at Paramount since 2006, the studio has not financed any of his movies in full or in part since the 2010 film Shutter Island. That mountain logo may appear on the screen, but Paramount merely distributed Hugo, Wolf of Wall Street and Silence, all of which were financed by others. The Irishman was so expensive that the late Brad Grey passed despite his love of his association with Marty. Only Netflix would take on The Irishman, and whether the streamer thinks it got its money's worth is known only within its secretive walls. (Netflix supposedly was in the mix for Killers, but it's hard to say whether the streamer's heart was really in that battle.)
Once Scorsese and DiCaprio revised Killers of the Flower Moon, Paramount empowered DiCaprio's longtime manager, Rick Yorn, to shop the project. No doubt the studio hoped no one would tackle it, which might persuade Scorsese to come back to the original idea and the hoped-for budget. (And Paramount likely would have sought a financing partner.)
Looks as if Paramount and the rest of the Hollywood agrees Scorsese and DiCaprio are taking a dump all over a phenomenal book.

Martin Scorsese says “the art of cinema is being systematically devalued, sidelined, demeaned, and reduced to its lowest common denominator” due to the naming of films as “content.”
In a major career milestone, Jesse Plemons will star in Scorsese's KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON. He takes the leading FBI agent role which was to have been played by Leo DiCaprio but who stepped into a more supporting part.
