I am watching the Blu-rays now on a 80 gig PS3 with B/W compatibility. Everything looks and plays fine with mine, but the odd thing is that I like to watch the series with the original playback. When I play it for the first time, it will play with the enhanced playback for a second or two, then go to back to the original playback. Has anyone else experienced that as well?

Does anyone know why season 2 has more grain? The PQ in season 1 was near flawless. Season 2 still looks good, but just doesn't seem to be quite the same quality.

I've also noticed the season 2 discs have longer load times then season 1 did, but only be a few seconds, i haven't a 3 minute problem like you have I'm thinking the initial load has to do with BD live |

I dont not think about BD live, it's not all of them but it did take 3 minutes at least for that one disc to load, it's a bit weird. I don't have any updates of firmwares for my player currently so I think I am ok on that part

I noticed that as well. In some episodes the picture as you say is flawless in some scenes, then goes to something subpar. Perhaps some of the shots on set were done with different film, or the original footage may have been damaged?

From my understanding, the visual effects team remastered season 2 before season 1. The effect teams did it out of chronological order so some effects look better than others. Many of the episodes in season 2 was completed before season 1. So when they started work on season 1, the team had more experience to improve on the visuals.

Yes. everything plays fine for me. But I have noticed a PQ difference from season 1. more grain and even some washy colors in certain scenes. Maybe the budget has changed? or the source material in season 2 is in worse shape. Anyway I am still diggin it!

![]() Your post seems confusing to me. Yes, the episodes were remastered and televised out of order, but the Season 1 BD set was not prepared after the Season 2 set. I really didn't notice a difference in grain between Seasons 1 and 2. The overall PQ is not as exceptional in Season 2, but that's because of the lower budget and lower production standards. Doug |

I think most of the changes in quality between Season 1 and 2 lie in the quality of the source materials. It is a well-known fact that Season 2 was shot with a lower budget than Season 1, and that may have had an effect on filming choices and post-production quality. Watching the episodes, this seems more likely to me than any huge differences in the 2000's-era remastering process. There are huge variations between scenes within ONE episode - heck, within one scene. Certain camera angles are terribly out of focus, dirty, and lacking in detail, and then the angle will change to a beautiful shot of something else. This just makes it look like the episodes were, at times, cobbled together from shots of varying quality - which is a very real possibility. They were probably much less concerned with image consistency to the same fidelity that we are concerned with it now, considering the TVs everyone would view this show on were orders of magnitude less capable of resolving such fidelity. |

If this helps, here are the original air dates for the remasters with the repeats.
Season 1: 2006/07 http://trekmovie.com/tos-in-hd/hdtv-...episode-order/ Season 2: 2007/08 http://trekmovie.com/tos-in-hd/tos-i...pisode-order2/ Kind of interesting that 'The Ultimate Computer' has an air date of 02.09.08. Its opening shot is so far the worst that I have seen yet. The Enterprise along with the space station looks like a couple of plastic children's toys! (yech) . |

For those wondering about PQ differences between Seasons 1 and 2: Toshiba subsidized the remastering of Season 1 for the (at the time) exclusive HD DVD release. From everything I read, it was a significant amount of money that To$h
provided for said release. |

They subsidized the HD DVD encoding/authoring. The actual restoration was underway before Toshiba ever came into the picture because they were airing the shows on TV in HD. Toshiba had no hand in the restoration work.
