Cool Helix (Ron D. Moore's new SyFy series)

1st trailer for BSG producer Ron Moore's new Syfy series Helix
Quote:

Something really, really creepy is going on in the first teaser trailer for Ronald D. Moore’s (Battlestar Galactica) new Syfy series Helix.

The network has revealed the first peek at Moore’s The Thing-esque series, which follows a team of several dozen scientists working at a large Arctic research facility:

Quote:
"When a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, they quickly find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation.”
The teaser sets the scene, with a slow pan through the snowy landscape offering a peek at the research base. We then cut to a pristine, white-washed research lab, where a scientist takes off his mask to reveal ... something creepy leaking off his face.
What is that black ooze? We don’t know, but we really want to find out.

The series is set to debut later this year. While we wait, check out the trailer below:

Looks interesting. Nice to see Sci-fi trying to make good shows again like in the past.

I wouldn't state this is a return to prominence for Sciffy. It's an alright first step.... the channel, as a whole, has a lot to prove to the fan base they alienated. This....sounds ok initially, but I'm not exactly sold on it. I give it a season, maybe two and then it'll be canceled.... it's not a knock on the show, but Sciffy...I don't trust the network anymore.

Nice to see yet another SyFy original series. It seemed like they only had about as many original shows as ones they licensed to show (such as Lost Girl and Continuum).

It looks to have potential at least.

Finally watched Season 2. My thoughts: "meh" and "weird". The tone of the show diverged significantly from Season 1, and there was a lot of "why is this happening?" moments and moments created mostly for shock value.

I generally don't mind crazy stuff going on in my shows, but this show really tried to take it overboard (probably deriving from American Horror Story from other commentary I've seen). This was a bad move as I watched and enjoyed Season 1 because it focused on problem-solving, drama, and questions of ethics and morals. The second season went ahead with, "What's morals? Pshh" and proceeded to go absolutely bonkers nuts.

The other problem is characters in the second season aren't conflicted about ANYTHING that happens, despite the incredibly messed-up nature of what's going on. The closest we get to emotional turmoil is, "I'll tell you after five years of therapy." Characters in the second season go through severe and dramatic changes in their conduct and behavior while hardly blinking an eye, and characters also act completely out-of-character at times just to shock or drive the plot forward, because the show must go on, logic be shunned!

The first season was great. Easily an 8 or 9 out of 10. The second season is more like a 6 out of 10, and while I binge-watched the first season when it came out, I consumed the second season much more slowly because after the first few episodes it just got weirder and weirder and grosser and grosser for no good reason. I actually found myself shutting the show off at times because I was tired of the sheer insanity of the proceedings.

I never saw Season 1 but picked up and saw the entirety of Season 2, it was a trainwreck worth watching even I suspected there would be no renewal or conclusion. Too many lolwut and wtfbbq to not watch.

I really enjoyed the first half of season 1. It lost me second half. I want to see the second season, but I don't want to pay for it.

Second season is on Netflix right now if you have an account or a friend with an account.
