Okay, so....why did they show the most painfully unfunny/unappealing trailers of the year?

(Oh, friend, you don't want to go exploring the sewers of "Big-budget British-produced kids' films", it's not a comfortable place you like to spend for very long, especially if they have a recognizable kids' book in the title. )

1. American Sniper -- by a wide margin. I'm thinking a total of around $50M. It's going to play HUGE in Red States.

2. Wedding Ringer -- a distant second, but should do pretty well, around $20M.

3. Paddington -- this one is confusing. But I hope it does ok, around $12-$15M.

4. Taken 3 -- I think that the patina has finally slipped off of this.

5. Selma -- this will be right there with Taken 3.

So, 5.3 Million on Thursday night for American Sniper. Wow. This is going to do 25-30 Million on Friday probably. Could end up the most impressive box office story of the year and it's January.

Competition will be WAY too fierce for Blackhat to do well. American Sniper and Taken 3 will be popular with the action crowd. Might benefit from sell-outs but not so much that it will do that well.
Liam attended the Jim Carrey school of "I should have just shut my mouth about guns and danced for my money" last week and a large portion of the action crowd is now done with him.

Eric, it's time to get out of the 90's and up to speed, there was a whole franchise called Harry Potter you've missed out on.

It's probably got more to do with the movie not being very good. But I agree that he needed to shut his piehole about America and guns. Especially given how many gun-toting action heroes he's been playing lately.

I'll confess I'm stunned by the projected box office take of American Sniper. The ads have been great, but I guess I never expected people to be that interested after all the previous Iraq War movies tanked(granted, those all depicted it in a very negative light). I'm assuming Jesse Ventura will not be one of the people attending a screening this weekend.

Really really wish all these jingoistic war movies would not do quite so well.
I think it sends a bad message and acts as a recruiting tool which is not cool.
Having said that I am very excited to see it one of these days. Hope it is good as CLint has made a few not so great ones lately.

Blackhat looks to already be one of the biggest bombs of the year and we are only 3 weekeend s into the new year

Never underestimate the desire of Americans to see a white guy kill brown people!!

Heard that on.the radio, laughed.

Havent seen the movie but heard this dude made up a lot of lies in his book.

Probably see it tommorrow.

No, that was an American produced one--
I'm talking about the British-studio produced ones that do their own iconic novels, try to "update" the books' dated images by strategically "out-Hollywood"'ing their image of American kids' movies for marketable pre-teen crassness, cartoony villains and crazy chase-climaxes, and boy do they succeed. (Frightening said Americans in the process.)
Unless you'd rather sit through Five Children & It, the John Goodman "Borrowers", Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, and BOTH Nanny McPhee's again.

Curious...what are "all these" jingoistic war movies that are dominating box offices?

I caught Blackhat yesterday at the Thursday preview/midnight screening (it was actually at 11:10pm) and there were literally 3 other people in the theater not counting me and my friend. Don't see that one coming out on top with that reception. Movie itself wasn't terrible but pretty by the numbers

Most of them are still 90's/early noughties.

No one, that's a gigantic opening for an R rated film. With all it's nominations it'll have healthy legs too.
