This is a silly question, but as a casual anime fan would I enjoy this? I've never seen it so it would be a blind buy, I hear it mentioned as one of the all time "classics" of the genre but not sure. I enjoy things like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Paprika/Satoshi Kon films, more of the cyberpunk stuff than the Miyazaki things like even Princess Mononoke. Anyway, just looking for advice.
And is this for sale in stores anywhere? The only place that has it is Amazon and they made it Prime only as of now. Thanks- |

I agree with this. And if you like Ninja Scroll then check out Sword of the Stranger.

Although BestBuy's site still has the image up from the 2012 release, this does come with the slipcover. At $12 I don't see the price getting any lower considering the previous release never dipped lower than $12. As a fan, this is definitely worth it at this price, even as a blind buy imho.

You don't even need to be an anime fan to enjoy NINJA SCROLL. It's the most accessible anime ever made. I'd recommend it to anyone that enjoys movies and isn't offended by violence or nudity.

Ninja Resurrection though a neat OVA is based on the novel Makai Tensho, it's unrelated to Ninja Scroll despite both featuring a protagonist with the name Jūbei (Check out the film adaptation with Sonny Chiba for some great chanbara action!).
Ninja Resurrection is a candidate for a new HD remastering but there's definitely no word of one as of yet. Here's to hoping for one in the future. The TV series was produced in that mythical pre-HD digital age, so best you'll ever get out of that is an upscale. |

Is the PQ any different from the original blu-ray release? I can't seem to tell from the posted screenshots so far.

There certainly were plenty of tits and gore from what I saw on my blu ray.
The DNR on Ninja Scroll is quite unfortunate (though not fatal) as is the locked subtitles on Sentai's release. Usually anime movies tend to not to have locked subs as frequently as TV series, so it's disappointing that this was locked. All this said, I was surprised how well Ninja Scroll holds up as a movie. I didn't like it as much when I was a teen, but now I can see it with more objective eyes and I have to say, with this, Wicked City, and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust being available again now for everyone to see, I have to say Kawajiri really is a terrific filmmaker. Just really imaginative and cinematic. The editing, the camera angles, the pacing, the mise-en-scene...there are so many scenes that have that "Wow, that's creative, never saw that before" quality to them, and all his films have a certain sense of visual poetry to them. The wasp fight scene in Ninja Scroll is really beautifully done, and the use of colors, especially blue for night scenes, is incredibly artful. He gets slagged as merely a b-genre director, and while it is true his movies are mostly simple ero-guro action films, he has A-class talent in how he executes them. I actually much prefer Kawajiri's talents as a distinctive, original filmmaker over many of the modern Ghibli-aping anime directors. I definitely think Kawajiri is due for a reappraisal in the anime community, if not b-movie action fans. |
