UHD movies can be played on several displays LG Vizio, etc.

UHD HDR movies can be played only on SUHD Samsungs... simply because they are the only displays that have HDR capability at this time. Firmware updates are coming for other displays soon.

My LG OLED TV is HDR capable but doesn't have the MGo app so I can't watch any MGo (Vidity) movies on it.

As long those UHD players are silent in operation. Hard to find these days a silent one. Pff.

That's not bad at all. I believe Samsung's first BD player (BDP1000?) was around $799.

OUCH!!
we discussed this earlier.

logically I'm thinking their only real target for that player was content creators themselves, since there's no actual UHD blu-rays available to play with it.

The only people who'd want to buy that right now are people are going to be creating disks and need a player to test them in, those kinds of people probably wouldn't balk at the price tag too much.

Indeedy, because it's tech that's building on existing Blu-ray architecture, it's nothing like the leap that DVD was to HD DVD/BD. Samsung's players are crap anyway IMO but even so, I knew that the UHD player prices weren't gonna be nearer the $1000 as some were claiming; the tech is evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

Supposedly the 399 price is only for the preorder. The price will go up to 499 after that.

that would be very unlike Best Buy. If it goes back up it'll be for a week or 2 at most.

Actually, ^^ that's what Samsung told me as well. $399 is just for pre-orders and once they launch in March the price will go up to $499. Also very small dealer margin at the $399 price.

Yep I have been buying old home cinema magazines off ebay of late and one came yesterday.
It had a bit about CES 97 and how the dvd players will vary in price and how Sony are being quiet and may launch at $1000

How times change...

Or not if your Sony

I threw all mine out when I moved house, I figured what was the bloody point? I kept one issue of HCC about Phantom Menace and Dolby EX, that's it.

I lost all my home entertainment issues in a move, I have all my HCC's tho.
I have loved going back reading LD reviews and them speculating on the future of tech

$399's a very fair price for brand new tech. However, it's a bit more than I'd like to pay for a starter player that may not have all the kinks worked out. I'd also prefer to get a second gen model as I remember how wonky the earlier players were for hd dvd and perhaps blu. But with pre-order prices on new discs being close to blu prices, I may still stock up on some of the new titles and watch the blu until I grab a player and display. It'd also be nice to go the projector route for 4k to get the most out of the format, but it may be a while until we see sub $1k prices on a decent one. So in other words, I may be following the discussions for a while before I actually get to start watching 4k content.
