I don't know if anything will ever top the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park for "wow" moments (especially the first time you see that herd running, and the brontosaurus, etc.) just because of the sheer novelty of it. We've become so used to amazing special effects since then that it's harder to amaze us. Avatar looks like it could be the next one to do that though...

Agreed, although its the actual idea that makes it work, the sfx aren't all that great.

I agree that Sunshine is the most recent film where the SFX truly wowed me (quite possibly as I wasn't expecting it).

In spite of how much I hate Spiderman 3 (it killed my enjoyment of the first two films stone dead!) That scene is fantastic! Particualrly on Blu-ray where every minute grain of sand is so well defined

Would love to see all those scenes that were remastered in 8K on a Super Hi-Vis TV set!

But in 1080p they still look amazing

I know I will get flamed for this but...

Matrix Reloaded:

- Neo fight/Highway
- Saving Trinity

Matrix Revolutions:

- Neo vs Mr. Smith (in my opinion one of the best scenes on film as far as EFFECTS)

Only until they started fighting up in the air. Now that looked very fake.

I thought all of these scenes were awesome too! I also loved the battle of Zion; I thought it was pretty big and intense.

Revolutions has some of the most flawless CG work I've ever seen, IMO.

I agree with pretty much what everyone else has stated already, but one I haven't seen mentioned yet is the first werewolf transformation scene done in An American Werewolf in London. It's still one of the best sfx shots, well, as far as monster movies go anyway and it was done all on camera without cutaways and without computers.
