If they're REALLY going to do this, it would be cool if they brought Kirsten Dunst back for a cameo to link the two movies, but I doubt they'll be so imaginative and will just reboot (when it really could be a sequel). Still think it's needless though.

Yeah, it would be far better if it was a sequel. They could even update it with it being a videogame based on the board game Jumanji.

In both cases making them reboots is idiotic. It would be very easy to make them sequels set decades later similar to Jurassic World. I don't see the point in rebooting when there is no reason a new Jumanji movie can't be made in the original movies continuity

It must be wrestling lions while he spent his time in the jungle that got him in such great shape. In this reboot.

I actually would like to see the reboot.

Casting Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart tells me that this remake is going to be an out and out comedy.

What made the original so great was it's sinister undertones. It has some genuine darkness in it.

Dwayne Johnson Officially Boards Jumanji Remake

Quote:
It was recently reported that Dwayne Johnson and his Central Intelligence co-star Kevin Hart were both in early talks to star in Sony Pictures‘ Jumanji remake. Now The Rock himself has left a message on his Instagram page making his headlining status on the project official, with shooting scheduled to start this fall in Honolulu, Hawaii. There was no confirmation of Hart, however.

It's OFFICIAL: Love this script! Big movie news that me and my canine gal Shang are excited to share To produce, create and deliver original properties to fans like HBO's #ballers to this summer's #CentralIntelligence is one of the best parts of my job. But to take great properties that are beloved worldwide like #BAYWATCH and #RAMPAGE and have the opportunity reimagine their stories in dope new ways to a whole new generation is truly an honor. It's official. We'll produce and deliver to a whole new generation a title that I love and is one of my all time favs: There's games you play for fun... then there's games that change your life. JUMANJI Working on edging up an already very good script with my @sevenbucksprod team. Up next is meeting with our producer Matt Tolmach and director Jake Kasdan. Shooting starts this fall. Promise to deliver something cool and special.. and not screw the whole damn thing up. As always I'll keep you posted. Casting this should be fun! #JUMANJI #JungleLife #JustPressStart #SONYPictures

Johnson will shoot the Jumanji remake before the third season of his HBO series Ballers. He is scheduled to shoot Fast 8 this summer.

The Jumanji remake will return to the source material that inspired the 1995 film, re-adapting Chris Van

Allsburg’s 1985 children’s book in which a magical board game causes jungle plants and creatures to invade a quiet American suburb.

Bad Teacher and Sex Tape helmer Jake Kasdan will direct Jumanji from a screenplay by High Fidelity and Con Air scribe Scott Rosenberg with frequent Bad Robot executive producer Jeff Pinkner serving as a consultant. Matt Tolmach will produce the film, scheduled for a July 28, 2017 release. William Teitler is also producing with Ted Field. Mike Weber and Van Allsburg executive produce.

Directed by Joe Johnston, the 1995 big screen take on Jumanji stars the late Robin Williams opposite Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, Bradley Pierce, Jonathan Hyde, Bebe Neuwirth, David Alan Grier and Patricia Clarkson.

It's funny. Everything from the 90s that was silly and goofy is now being run through the "dark and gritty" meat grinder, while everything that was dark and threatening is now slick, soulless, and safe PG-13 adventure.

I'd like to go back to 1997 and tell myself, "You know, not too far from now, Terminator movies will be aimed at teens and Batman movies will be rated R." I wonder how hard my 1997 self would laugh.

His decision. I'm not going to hate on him for it like some do when actors are cast in films they don't like the sound of. Good luck to him; hopefully he'll be the Robin Williams of this Jumanji to a new generation who perhaps haven't seen Robin Williams in the original.

I just watched the original again tonight. The movie still holds up very well and it was great seeing Robin Williams in one of his best roles. Anyway do we know the direction this is going yet? Is it definitely a remake or more of a reboot following the story (Jurassic World)? With the way the original ends there is no reason they need to remake the same story when they can instead follow a new group of people that find the game.

I also would love of they made another movie with another game. Zathura is very good and stands well next to Jumanji. They could going in all different types of directions with that.

I'm fine with sequels, but I'm always cautious with remakes. When CGI started to be the go-to technique for visual effects, I had a thought then that Hollywood will start doing remakes of old practical effects films from then on. And look now, they're already doing remakes for CGI films. So I was wrong, remakes are not about updating the techniques, but rather lack of new ideas and creativity.

So is it gonna be The Rock is trapped in the game for thirty years and he builds his freakish musculature to survive in Jumanji, and Kevin Hart is Bonnie Hunt?

I think he's David Alan Grier, with expanded screen time.

I would much prefer that to this. I thought Zathura was a brilliant spiritual sequel to Jumanji and there's all sorts they could do along similar lines. They could even make that Monopoly movie yet to happen a spiritual sequel.

Yeah it is what I'd prefer too. However we don't know if this movie will have Alan, Judy, Peter, and Sarah so it could be all new characters. The game was still intact at the end and in another country. Who knows where it's been in the 21 years since. They could have completely different sets of consequences for each role too. I'm trying to keep an open mind here.

I would definitely prefer to see a Jumanji film with new characters as opposed to a remake. To me, that would be the way to do it so you don't miss Robin Williams. His performance would still exist in continuity but nobody would be trying to replace him.

I think Jumanji is something that could be spiralled out into a shared universe. If you made a Jumanji 2, Zathura 2 and new board games-to-life films, you could explore the mythology behind the games and what it is that gives them their power to come to life.
