Oh well, it is what it is I suppose. It's been confirmed there'll be more of him in the EE and I really hope it's a substantial amount of footage.
Kind of similar to George R. R. Martin in South Park. "Oh the dragons are coming, they're on their way!"

I got desolation of smaug extended edition for Christmas! What are the new scenes because its been over a year since I've seen the movie in the theater.

I've notice a few new scenes
1. Beorn intro
2. political scenes with the master and Alfred
3. Thorin's dad

Also has there been an word/rumor about how much longer the BOTFA EE will run. I have a feeling that i'll be longer the ROTK... minutes added back wise.

Jackson estimated it will be around 30 minutes longer. Personally I kinda hope it'll be more like 40-45 minutes.

I'm working on sledging my way through the special features of Hobbit 1 EE. I find myself skipping over large swaths of prosthetic & wardrobe fittings...rather boring. Anyone have a suggested watch/skip breakdown for Smaug EE special features? (I like the bonus content, but I'd almost prefer a hour-long making-of documentary)

I watched both EE films this week followed by BOTFA, all for the first time (seen theatrical versions of first two before). I remember liking Smaug a bit better for the theatrical version, but the whole time I felt rather bored. I dunno.

Part of me wants to get BOTFA EE, part of me wants to sell off my EE's and pickup the Theatrical 3D Trilogy and another part wants to just be done with Hobbit. I dunno what to do.

I don't need action action action, but I just kept thinking 'nothings happening' throughout large parts of the films and 'oh look, more fighting' in the last. (In addition to 'Gandolf's Eagles would have made Hobbit and LOTR films a short 10 minutes'...lol)

I'd be interested to see a 4-hour cut of the whole trilogy.

I remember finding the second disc of DOS's appendices much more interesting than the first. The "Smaug" and "People and Denizens" documentaries include a lot more Tolkein references and insight into the adaptations. The "Realms" section was a bit dull as it was mostly (if I remember correctly) location scouting and set design that was covered elsewhere in the bonus features. The first disc included some of this is as well, but it was more about the production process, funny stories, actor impressions, etc. The ones that made an impression on me otherwise would be anything to do with Beorn, the Barrels doc (very amusing), and whichever Laketown doc included Colbert. That was a fun moment.

The extended cut for this film, for me, makes Desolation an absolute work of majesty, but the Wilhelm scream ruins the Gandalf sequence. I'm supposed to be worried about Gandalf, not laughing.

I know that was a really touching scene with Thrain until they used the Wilhelm scream
& totally killed it.

Watched this tonight for the first time ever, out of the trilogy set. I quite liked it! Similar to the first movie it's a very fun ride once you accept the lighter tone compared to LotR and learn to ignore the CGI overload. I'm slowly but surely getting more used to CGI in general and liking more modern movies as a result. It's a shame the movie looks so digital and fake even when they're on location though.

Anyway, I had a good time. Legolas might be crazy overpowered but he's fun as hell to watch and the dialog with the dwarves and Bilbo is fast and entertaining. I think removed of any expectations based on the book or LotR trilogy this is a solid, fun fantasy film.

Well, I thought I did. I watched the EE last night and found it to be a bit of a slog to get through, especially the first hour. As choppy as I think the theatrical version is I like the way it mooooooves.

Just had the Five Armies EE drop on the mat, perfect timing.

I completely understand where you're coming from. The extended cut turns it into a much slower film, mostly in the first hour as you said. Whether this is good or bad is of course a matter of opinion, I myself prefer it to the theatrical cut but I can understand feeling like you do. In fact, even I have a couple minor problems with it. The main one is Mirkwood; I totally appreciate that the point is to make us feel that sense of being lost, all the frustration and confusion that the characters are experiencing, and it does a good job of that, but it does drag a bit. I think the best version of this sequence would be a middle ground between the theatrical and the extended cuts.

Also, while I love spending more time with Beorn (I feel it now captures more of the spirit of the book in a wonderful way), in retrospect I wonder how much of a point there is to it when he appears for a total of 40 seconds in the Extended Edition of the third film. I love the added Thráin stuff in Dol Guldur though, that alone makes the EE for me.

As I've posted elsewhere a few times extended cut pacing never really bothers me. As long as I like the new scenes I never feel like more is bad. I have a high tolerance for slower pacing I guess. After I watched the EE I went to the interwebs to see what was EE footage and I liked all those scenes, so it works fine for me.

There is a scene in the LotR EEs that I dislike but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head. The only movie scene that springs to mind as a bad extension is the colony stuff at the beginning of Aliens' Special Edition cut.

I watched Spectre in the theater last week and that's a theatrical cut that needs 20-30 minutes cut out of it, just because they're bad and pointless scenes.

Is it even that much? It feels like less.
