Default Bad Toenail - Performed My Own "Procedure" - Pics Inside - NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

Well, I have had some continuous pain in my left big toe for several years. It was on and off like it would last an hour or so every few months and I really didn't think anything of it. The past year or so it got a little worse. So I did some removal of my toenail myself a couple times thinking I got it. I used needle nose pliers, this "ice pick" type tool but lots smaller that came with a screw driver set, fingernail clippers and tweezers.

The first few times I figured I had gotten it. Well, today I was doing some trimming and decided to have another go at it. Persistence has paid off. I trimmed and then jabbed the tweezers down on the right side of my toenail (my right) and started pulling up. I did this like 8 times. Then I felt a tear. The right side of the toenail tore away from my toe and at that point, it started gushing blood. I cleaned it up and had to wait a few minutes for it to stop. It slowed and I continued. I shoved the tweezers further down to the base of my toe where it comes out from under the skin and starter yanking it up. I could feel it moving and also see some nail coming out. I pulled harder some more and I hear this "POP" sound and in that instant my toe felt like it let out a sigh of relief. The pain from the nail was gone.

I was shocked to see just how long it grew inside. There was never any pain unless it was bumped the wrong way or pressed in a certain spot. No swelling, redness, puss or anything. My toenail did have this ridge in it which tipped me off initially that something was wrong. I believe the ingrown nail was forcing the rest of the nail up and making it have a bump/ridge in it.

Anyways - it's still that way right now as the doc wants to see me on Tuesday to check everything out. They couldn't believe I did that. Lol. Being serious here - it did not hurt at all. Even when the toenail ripped away from the toe. I felt it, but it didn't hurt.

****PICTURES BELOW - WARNING - NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!****

If you look closely, you will see a line in one of the pictures - that line is where it start from the top and goes down. The entire thing looks like a sharks tooth. The V shape you see is where I cut it with the clippers because I was going to finish it off. However the doctors said to wait and I would probably need the whole nail removed. Oh, and for the record - that's the only toe/nail that looks that bad, all my other toes are nice

Congratulations. That looks pretty disgusting, but you probably saved yourself (or your insurance company) a good deal of money.

I thought I was proud of myself for tearing open my finger yesterday to get out a nice chunk of wood (I was wondering why my finger had been hurting for a few days, but never bothered to look and notice a chunk of wood resting pretty deep under my skin.

I had an ingrown toenail (big toe) when I was 14 or 15.... and had the Dr. cut it out....

I'm curious..... if you did this "Procedure" yourself, yet you still need to go the DR. for a follow up now...... Why do you consider this a victory

You should have just made an appointment a year ago, or whenever it was that is started bothering you.....

Well initially I was going to tear it off and be done with it. However I decided to consult a foot doctor (we know one personally now) and he wants me to come in and make sure there is nothing infected and all is well and possibly remove the entire nail.

It's a victory in the sense I got the damn thing out myself and it felt so much better. Why did I not go to the doctor before? Well, I don't have insurance and it was never painful. It hurt every now and then but nothing to warrant any further attention. So no need to do anything.

I performed a similar procedure myself a couple of months ago with a stanley knife, tweezers and a good amount of surgical alcohol. The amount of nail I pulled from under the skin was remarkably large, tough and sharp. Like you Drinkmore, it didn't really hurt to remove it (although I was braced for immense pain at all times! ), but you definitely seemed to have more blood involved than me.

Very satisfying indeed!

Yeah, I bleed like a stuck pig when I do bleed. It's weird. Must mean I got that good flowing blood and not that thick stuff

I think when i get it removed, I am going to frame it and hang it in my "man cave".

That is why you always cut your toenails straight across , making sure that the corners do not get cut back further than the flaps of skin on the sides. I used to have horribly painful ingrown toenails when I was in grade school and they would last a long time. After I learned the proper way to trim my toenails, I have been ingrown free for nearly 30 years.

if you start to get one, cut a "V" in the middle of your toenail and it will pull the edges out.

I'd say all of these combined compose the much needed and sorely lacking vomiticon.

That is the awesomest I've ever seen . Vomiting emoticon that is. Although, that toenail has an awesomeness about it.

I can't remember if it was this toe or my other big toe - one of them got ripped clean off one day when I was running around the house. Hit it on the sofa leg and the next thing you know there was some pain. I noticed hey - my toenail is gone! OUCH! Lol.

That's crazy what our bodies can do. I wonder what the cavemen did back in the day when they got an ingrown toenail. Not like they had tweezers back then.

they probably just ripped off the nail or left it. not sure they were capable of knowing the root cause of the pain.

it is weird to see what our bodies do.

My cousin's friend had an ingrown toenail so bad and had grown down so far into the toe that it actually punctured the skin through the bottom of the toe.
