Default best war movies

sorry if there is already a thread for this but found no matches in my searches. i am sure there are dozens of other good choices out there, but in my opinion a good war movies need good special effects, good acting and good sound. i am a bit younger so i am not up on the classic war epics(pre 70's). And what do you feel constitutes a "war" movie? does it have to represent actual events or can it be a sci-fi(war of the worlds, reign of fire)? so let the debate begin

Band of Brothers, followed closely by Saving Private Ryan. Also need to add:

A Bridge Too Far
The Eagle Has Landed
The Longest Day

A Bridge Too Far is a definite favorite for me-- it would be second on the
OP's list behind SAVING PRIVATE RYAN--

Apocalypse Now is number one.
Band of Brothers, though not officially a 'movie', is the best for WWII.
Saving Private Ryan, as the earlier post stated, starts out powerful but fades.

Edit: Going back to the Civil War -- there's Glory (see recent review)

Honestly, my favorite war film isn't even on the list! We Were Soldiers. I just love the way it shows loss on both sides; it's rare for films to do that. Tae Guk Gi was a fabulous one as well. Think Private Ryan in Japan (or Korea).

I would pick Full Metal Jacket, the Gettysburg (based on Killer angels) Grave of the Fireflies (anime about two children in Japan during WW II and the bombings, actually a children's movie, it is pretty gruesome though), and Patton.

Default War Movies

I would have to go with We were soldiers or Platoon for my favorite war movie. I think Apacolypse Now is great for it's time (1979) but it is way better then Shaving Ryan's Privates. I think everybody has the same opinion about Full Metal Jacket. Being that the 1st half is excellent while the second half is ok. Did you know that anthony michael hall turned down the role of private joker? How wierd would that have been?

We were soldiers

Battle of the Bulge
A bridge to Far
A bride over the river Kwai
The eagle has landed
Platoon
Hamburger hill
Apocalypse now
MASH

Missed a load, to early in the morning to think of blood and guts war movies.
