OVERVIEW

Gravity Crash combines vintage arcade shooter gameplay with striking 1080p 60fps vector graphics. The player pilots a small craft, mastering the flight mechanics to combat the perpetual gravitational pull is the key to success. Armed with an arsenal of main and special weapons, shield and a carefully watched fuel gauge, players battle gravity and inertia through 37 planets that each feature environmental dangers, enemies and other obstacles.

Additionally, Gravity Crash is the first Arcade Shooter on PSN to offer a Level Editor. Players can design their own planets fraught with danger, from narrow, twisting tunnels to deadly enemies. Then, they can publish and share it for others on the PlayStation Network to download and enjoy.

With “old school” arcade gameplay and glossed and colorful 1080p 60fps HD vector visuals, Gravity Crash offers a sense of 1980s arcade nostalgia while delivering the latest in visuals exclusively on PS3.

So I might be a little behind the times on PSP Trophies, but do they link to your PSN ID like PS3 Trophies?

Think they might be doing a PSP version as well but nothing from E3 so far.

Defy the rules of nature in Gravity Crash

The old school meets next generation visuals on PLAYSTATION 3 with the arrival of arcade shooter Gravity Crash - step aboard and get blasting.

Gravity Crash transports you back to a time of pure, simple yet addictive gameplay - with a brilliantly fresh next generation look and features. Based on arcade classics, the Just Add Water developed game puts you in the cockpit of a small spacecraft with the job of tackling a quota of objectives on 30 planets. Each planet comes with its own dangers, making it a tricky task to succeed before being transported to the next through a wormhole that opens once you've triumphed in your deeds.

Gravity is your enemy

The first of these challenges comes from the basic element of gravity itself. The heavy and constant inertia of your ship means you must master the flight mechanics or fatally smash straight into the planet's surroundings - so steady control of the craft's thrusters is a must. And you can't rely on them all the time either, as your diminishing fuel supply needs topping up as you fly.

Other threats come from enemies that come in all shapes and sizes, from aggressive gun emplacements to jellyfish that explode into smaller versions when you shoot them. The environment can also offer resistance through volcanic eruptions, tight and winding caverns and even deep bodies of water.

With all these factors, including the presence of crewmen who have to be collected by landing near them, Gravity Crash gives you a lot to deal with. Although all is not lost...

Crash happy

While your ship is equipped with basic laser blasts to help fend off enemies, there are also a few other advantageous enhancements. Enemy guided weapons are available in limited supply to take care of those pesky, hard to reach adversaries. Fuel can be topped up by shooting yellow crystals, and you also have a rechargeable shield which protects you from crashes and enemy fire.

Gravity Crash boasts visuals that merge the style of the 1980s with exceptional High Definition 21st century effects - heat haze, refraction, blurring, and more all come into play to give the game a glossy look without sacrificing its nostalgic core.

And with a comprehensive tutorial, four player multiplayer mode and Level Editor, there's plenty to keep you going past the 30 planets on offer - it's the 80s refreshingly brought up to date with warp speed.

Yeah, the PS3 trailer mentions the PSP version.

It should be relatively easy for PS3 and PSP level creations to work on both platforms. Hopefully it's something they're able to do and a discount buying both versions together would make a nice incentive.

Gravity Is A Harsh Mistress: Gravity isn't used enough these days. It seems like it is a mechanic that flared up in the arcade briefly and then fell into disuse. It's used in Gravity Crash in such a way that the player has to use a bit of finesse and judgment while piloting their craft. The addition of water, which frees your ship from gravity constraints but affects the way your weapons fire is a very nice touch.

The game is due out in September.

Don't know if that's the official target or an off-the-record comment by JAW. There was no release target in the E3 press release.

CoLD SToRAGE (Tim Wright) of Psygnosis fame (Lemmings, WipEout etc) is composing the soundtrack for Gravity Crash!

When I first saw pics of this I was just "meh" but the more I see the more nostalgic I get. I think I will get this one as long as there is a demo so I can get a feel for the mechanics.

I think this game will be great IFF it uses the right stick for shooting.

The ship shoots in the direction it's pointing, the right analog wouldn't be helpful.

Announcement announcement

As some may of noticed, on Tuesday the 18th of August, Sony hold their Press Conference in Cologne at GamesCom. Everyone knows that SCEE will be making various announcements at the conference.

Whilst we won’t be at the conference, due to making finishing touches to Gravity Crash for PlayStation3, we will be announcing something on the 18th too, around 19:00 BST. What can it be?! Stay tuned …
