Hello, I want to connect my macbook to my TV. My macbook has mini dvi so i plan on buying a mini dvi to hdmi adapter and then a HDMI cable (from monoprice of course) but for audio I am having a little trouble. The laptop has a Digital audio output/headphone out, so the digital cable has to be 3.5mm?
I dont know what cable I need to buy. I plan on hooking it up to my Onkyo 605 but also other Tvs when I am traveling, so what cables would I need? Thanks in advance |

From the headphone output on my macbook, I used a 1/8" to a Left/Right Y adapter rca cable. Easy and cheap!
If I knew how to post a link, I would. You probably know what I mean right? Last edited by Scarriere; 06-20-2009 at 02:11 AM. Reason: added adapter |

That is generally what you'd need for an application of this nature. Something like this: ![]() Or if you want to do a contiguous run, you can do one of these: ![]() Those can be found at just about any local electronics store for pretty cheap. |

You buy an optical cable and run it from the headphone jack to an optical input on the Onkyo. You need to get the little connect plug to fit into the headphone jack too.
Then you go into the Utilities folder and open the Audio MIDI setup and enable optical output. Then if the program your using (I mostly use VLC) might need you to tell it how to handle the audio. |

Check out this link:
http://forums.mactalk.com.au/20/5312...o-quality.html It says that Apple's digital audio ports double as analog and optical (a few posts down). That leads me to believe you don't need any special adapters. That said, though, you're going to get the best sound using the digital connection. Both of my HTPCs don't have a digital audio connection, and I use something similar to what I posted earlier. Both HTPCs sound great. |
