So I would like to hook my black macbook up to my receiver...for both audio and video....is all that would be need is a mini dvi-> hdmi cord and an hdmi cord? Would that only bring video thus meaning i need to buy something for audio as well?

It would be nice if they had optical audio out like the MacPro does, but you might find, only the lineout-RCA will do it.

Check to see if yours has a Toslink(optical) output. My MacBookPro's microphone jacks also is the optical output!
