District 9 director already thinking about a sequel

Neill Blomkamp, the South African writer-director of the upcoming sci-fi drama District 9, has yet to find out whether his movie will catch on with wider audiences the same way it did with folks who saw footage from it at last week's San Diego Comic-Con.

But the filmmaker said that he would be happy to return to the film's universe if it became a box-office smash. "If this film is successful, if audiences want another, whatever, District 10, I would love to do it," Blomkamp said in an exclusive interview this week in Los Angeles. "It's a very personal film, and it's a universe and a place that I find incredibly creative. I'd love to go back to that universe."

The movie deals with the arrival of a million insectoid aliens, derisively called "Prawns," in a massive ship over Johannesburg, South Africa, and the uneasy coexistence between humans and aliens 28 years later who live in the grinding poverty and violence of a township-like camp. The action is set in motion by a low-level bureaucrat, played by newcomer Sharlto Copley, who heads an armed force that enters the slum, District 9, to make way for a forced relocation of the aliens. When things take an unexpected turn, Copley's Wikus van der Merwe finds his life turned upside down, and he is forced to question his assumptions and forge an uneasy alliance with an alien and his young son.

Blomkamp said that if audiences wanted something different from him, he was working on something else that would no doubt appeal to the same audience, even if the project went in a slightly different direction.

"I have another science fiction film now that I want to write for the rest of the year," Blomkamp said. "That I think may be the next one, and I'm incredibly into [it]. It's quite different, and it's a unique idea, but I'm very into it."

Describing the tone, he said it would feature a similar combination of grand ideas and great action set pieces: "It's similar," he said coyly. "I mean, it's a very different film, but it's a very similar genre, I suppose."

First Extended TV Spot for Peter Jackson's District 9 Hits

I saw this on the tube yesterday and thought it was the best yet. This has become an opening weekend viewing for me! Check it out (click the pic).

A brand new extended 60-second TV spot for Neill Blomkamp's District 9 has just landed online. Don't expect to too much new footage, but this is a bit of a different cut than the most recent trailer and does feature some very interesting and revealing lines of dialogue (I won't say which ones). If you haven't already heard, District 9 will be showing at Comic-Con on Thursday this week, so expect to hear some early buzz coming from that. Peter Jackson, who produced this, will also be at Comic-Con in support of the movie. So even if you're not going to be San Diego this week, definitely watch this, it's still looks as awesome as before.

An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions in Johannesburg, South Africa suddenly find a "kindred spirit" in a government agent from MNU that is exposed to their mysterious biotechnology.

District 9 is both written and directed by first-timer Neill Blomkamp, a South African filmmaker who previously directed the awesome Halo: Arms Race shorts. The screenplay was co-written by Blomkamp and writing partner Terri Tatchell. This project is based on Blomkamp's short film Alive in Joburg, which can be seen online here. Sony will be bringing District 9 to theaters everywhere on August 14th this summer.

Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp were previously working on a "Halo" movie before Microsoft ran into problems finding a studio to partner with. They are now finishing up "District 9" and have just announced that their film will be rated R for bloody violence and pervasive language.

The teaser for the movie doesn't show any footage that could lead to R-rated situations, but apparently fans can expect some serious carnage on August 14th.

When I went to go see Transformers the other night, we were waiting in the theater for two hours after they let us in the door. You know how theaters show that "First Look" for certain studios? It's like a behind-the-scenes look at movies and TV shows. They were showing a "First Look" on District 9 and it almost looks like a comedy. News reporters go right up to the aliens and show them eviction papers. Then it gets all serious and this one human is trying to help the aliens because mankind is taking advantage of them.... I don't know. I can't tell if it's like a dramedy or action film or what.

None of the above. It's a sci-fi.. The aliens become refugees, etc but it is certainly not a comedy. Seems like a bit of social commentary behind the sci-fi .. but most good sci-fi has that. It will be weird for sure.. but in a good, different way. It started as a short film and PJ pushed the guy for a full length movie and is producing it.
