USA How can we value someones opinion?

Don't you just love when members hate on or mock your choices or slam what you have purchased.......then you look and they don't even have one single picture of their own home theater in their gallery? How can we trust someones opinion when we have no proof that their comments are even justified.....

Because everyone has an opinion regardless, and behind the protective wall that is the internet, they are free to say what they say without fear of consequence or repercussion. Sure, we can insult or thrash them back, but in the end, is that going to make them change their mind? No.

In the end, the best thing to do is "Ignore"

Not sure why anyone would criticize your setup, since it is really nice.

It said he was banned, although I don't know why.

On topic though, yeah, I agree with everyone else. Sweet setup and sweet avatar.

I personally have no photos of my setup because I'm extremely lazy.

I don't post photos of my HT because I'd have to clean up my room first, and I don't wanna.

Not that anybody should need photos to prove what they have to validate their opinions. Seriously, what would it prove anyway? How hard would it be for me to just get online and find some pictures of cool gear and say "hey! Look! I have all this!" Conversely, I bet if I started posting pictures of my house, forum members would be divided as to whether they believe I really live here. So what?

Some people just get way too caught up in the dik-measuring mentality. Who cares what anybody thinks of your HT? If you're happy with it, that's all that matters. There's no point getting sensitive about it, and it is especially lame to engage in any "mine is bigger" nonsense, which I do think is annoyingly common in this community. The only thing more ridiculous than caring what someone else thinks of your HT, is caring about what someone else has enough to bother insulting it.

I agree about pics/member level/and overall post history to back up claims about other peoples HT's. If someone is saying "Man, those Polk's suck and you have too many toys," when they have a lil tube tv and blast the tapes through the ol' VCR- I ignore.

While we're at it, lets discuss the "angry typing" that goes on. This forum is about a hobby that is a form of entertainment... no?

If you have to defend you post with "I'll post what I want suckers" or you actually get into an argument - ON A CHAT FORUM, perhaps you should examine your conversation skills.

Drives me bonkers:

"I hate that movie, it sucks" (with no further elaboration)
"No one will watch that movie" (cause I will just to piss you off)
"Looks like it will suck, I will never watch it and I don't like it"
"Your opinion is wrong, mine is right"
Any post that starts with "You're an idiot"

No...it had nothing to do with MY set-up, I was reading another thread here and It just came over me that people like to "grumble" ,or tell us what we should be buying or what's wrong with our set-up's when they can't even show us theirs.......It was really no big deal. I just wanted to share this with everyone, cause it gets a little annoying. I do also agree with you 100% JJxiv1215 that it's best to ignore.I just wish after being a member for quite some time now that these things would get better....but it just goes to show us that people are a trip! ....

(Riff Magnum.......I will PM you now.)

Most of us on this site are total strangers, but it's interesting how a person can get a feel for different personalities with repeated contact on an internet forum.

Valuing someone's opinon likely springs from being able to respect that person, and like a lot of other things which come with patience, gaining respect can only be earned over time, and not demanded in the short-term.

I would say there are maybe 25-30 members that I recognize immediately and value their expertise and advice. Among various reasons, they are also "always active."

This has been my first experience with forums, and I feel I found one of the best. I checked out AVS, but just did not get the same feel.

There are a few members on here I've come to respect their opinions and suggestions over time, I do not know them personaly of course but over time, reading their post, seeing how they reply, the respect they show others, made me trust what they say. Others I now just ignore, they are only here to complaint and they never offer much of interest.

LMAO......

Opinions are like a**holes. Everybody has one and they all stink!

P.S. You only really ever want to hear your own as well.

The rating system is kind of a double edged sword. I like being able to press a single button to look at all the nicest theaters on this site, but at the same time you have to take it with a grain of salt.

I have had people PM me to tell me the color of my theater is horrible and I should change it. It has been rated a 1 and so on...

There are trolls, jelousy, personal bias and all of the above.

I do enjoy constructive criticism and welcome it. It is fairly easy to tell who is serious and who is not.

I do think though that ratings should also require a comment or else they are meaningless. with that said the point of posting pictures is to share them.
