Default Regarding the PS3 bluray player.....

Hi everyone,

Is the PS3 bluray player is the best one right now in terms of showing movies? If not, what's better than PS3 bluray player?

I want the answers in details and please with some links if they are available because I've heard it's the worst.

Thanks in advance.

Who has told you it's the worst? Check sites like Ultimate AV Mag and Sound and Vision mag (I think ultimateAVmag.com and soundandvision.com, but try googling them). Many comparisons I've seen of the PS3 w/ other BD players say that it's among the best because it has faster loading times.

I thoroughly enjoy mine. It outputs at 1080p, it can send uncompressed audio, and can output at 24Hz, which is the frame-rate of most movies. Also, it is $599, which makes it the second cheapest player on the market (Sony's new BDP-S300 is the cheapest at $499), and it's also a video game console.

Once again, where have you heard it's the worst? Many people on this site will give it a top-notch rating.

I would have to agree with nhaase. Not to mention that the folks over at Sony are constantly improving upon the capabilities that the PS3 can handle via software updates. (Up-scaling regular DVD's to a 1080 resolution, etc.) I would certainly check out what the full capabilities (hardware and software ) that the PS3 is capable of. I'm certainly a big fan of mine.

Just a sampling....and these are older reviews so most of the issues like 24fps, upscaling DVD's, disc auto-start are now included. There are other reviews as well .. just look around. Trolls, sockpuppets and other nefarious folks aren't going to be honest about the PS3's capabilities...deception is their goal in life or they get paid to misinform people. Beware.

Soundandvisionmag.com should have an archived review of the PS3 as a Blu Ray player. At that time it didn't have upconversion, but with the new 1.81 update, it can now do so. I have had no problems with mine as far as PQ or SQ. Everything looks great on it, and the reviewer at Sound and Vision gave it a high recommendation saying it was a bragain Blu Ray player with excellent sound and picture.

Why would it be? What is your concern.

Btw, this pretty well sums up the deal for me...from the avrev link above..their summary.

"At $599, the 60 GB Sony Playstation 3 is an incredible value. Its gaming power shows huge potential and free online gaming saves you some dough compared to the Xbox 360. The Blu-ray functionality is equally impressive. Its role as a computer is somewhat limited but can provide you that late night fantasy sports fix in ways a traditional DVD player or game machine simply can not. Audiophiles will rejoice at the fact SACD wasn’t forgotten, but it is the game play that really makes the Playstation 3 worthy of such strong praise. Even if you are too old or too cool to play some Madden with your kids, you have to have both of your retinas detached to not see how strikingly incredible the picture and action looks. Factor that in with 1080p movies on Blu-ray and you have a case for why it might just be worth bucking up on eBay for one of these machines. In the 10 year history of AVRev.com, we have never ever suggested our readers pay above retail for a product before, but Playstation 3 is so impressive we might need to break that tradition. The Sony Playstation 3 is beyond the Holiday season’s hot gift. The PS3 is ground-breaking technology, and the most significant convergence component ever sold."

The PS3 is the future of home entertainment. Video games, Blu-ray, DVD-Upscaling, Internet, Media Storage, etc... You can't go wrong. My PS3 is connected to a 720p Panasonic Plasma, the picture quality is much better than a Samsung BD-1000 connected to a TrueHD 1080p Sony Projector. Both of which use HDMI. The picture is more crisp. I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2x blu-ray reader isn't equivalent to 2x cd reader.
When CD readers got to 52x and DVD came out at 1X dvd.
The DVD reader didn't read slower. If actually reads faster, they just reset the number back to 1x.

If you look at the actual read time in kb/s you will see that a 2X blu-ray reads faster than a 52x CD reader or a 16x DVD reader.

There alot more data on the disc when going from CD to DVD to Blu-ray that it has to be faster in order to read that much more data. It still may take longer to read the data on blu-ray as there is alot more data on it, but the kb/s read rate is higher.

A 2x BD read speed is slower than the max read speed of a 16X DVD.

A 16X DVD max read speed is 177 mbs

BD 2X max read speed is 72mbs.

i've always thought 1x read speed was real-time play speed for the given media, or at least a close approximation. what i mean is since a CD holds 74 minutes of CDA, a 1x CD-Rom would take 74 minutes to read/write an entire disc. it takes 1x speed to maintain play speed on the given media, am i right?

1x CD= ~0.15Mb/s
1x DVD= ~11Mb/s
1x BD= ~36Mb/s

Given that the PS3 is not a burner having a read speed much over 2X really would be pointless.

I'm not sure what the speed is for the BDP-S300, but it was SLOW. I returned it and got the PS3 and it just flys!

PS3 is probably the best Bluray player on the market and the most future proof in my opinion with its power cell processor, upgradeable hard drive, and ethernet port.

You cannot go wrong with the PS3 as your blu-ray player. I have heard no negative criticism about it as a blu-ray player. Mine works perfectly, would suggest it to anyone.

I'm curious to hear why people have told you it's the worst. They are obviously misinformed, or just Sony haters.

It's a game machine first. The faster it can read the data the quicker the game can load. If it was just a movie player a 2x drive would be pointless.
