Default Whoa! SFX scenes in films

I was recalling some of the more unforgettable, can't-believe-I-just-saw-that special effects scenes in movies (when I first saw them). Here are some of my top ones:

-Pretty much every effect on the T-1000 in Terminator 2
-When Trinity rises in the air to fight the cops at the beginning of The Matrix (and most everything else, bullet time, etc. thereafter)
-The beginning of LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring when Sauron comes out in his armor during the battle, swings his weapon, and sends men flying.
-The Battle of Pelennor Fields in LOTR: The Return of the King, when the enemies first came out riding the elephant-like creatures (and when Legolas climbs up one of them to bring it down).
-Nightcrawler attacking the President at the beginning of X2: X-Men United.
-King Kong vs. T-Rexes in Peter Jackson's version.

What are some of yours?

I'm going old school...

The Liam Neeson and Darryl Hannah ghosts in High Spirits.

The penny trick in Ghost.

The heart removal scene in Temple of Doom.

The evil queen's headless body walking around in Return to Oz (still gives me the heebie jeebies when I see this).

Can't believe I forgot The Abyss and Temple of Doom, or Raiders, for that matter (smacks forehead). I'll see if I can dig up those scenes from Ghost and Return to Oz online to see for myself.

Default Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within...

My brother worked in Editorial on Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within for quite a number of years. One day I visited the Square office in downtown Honolulu, and he screened the scene when Aki Ross rises (i.e. floats) up from her chair to look at the world through a window. It was AMAZING! At that time...creating realistic looking CGI people was SO new...it blew me away!

Too bad the film wasn't well-received, but at least Aki Ross later showed up in Anamatrix! The Wachowski brothers were obviously impressed with the film too

I agree with LOTR, King Kong, and Nightcrawler sequences...I would add
1)Minas Tirith in the return of the king
2) Transformers transformations
3) some of the effects in Stardust
4) (when I was younger) Ray Harryhousen's stuff
5) the golden army in Hellboy II

For me, it wasn't anything that blew me away like the other stuff did, either because the action had been done before in the first Transformers movie, or because I didn't feel it was anything out of the ordinary.

I forgot to mention the first reveal of Harvey Dent as Two-Face in The Dark Knight- yes, I'd seen similar EFX before, but I distinctly remember cheering in my head, "Yes! They nailed his look exactly!"

I've always been mesmerized by special effects. Some of the ones that really blew me away would be:

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"...pretty much the whole movie.
"Transformers," most of the movie, especially the highway chase and the battle in the city.
"Knowing," the accident scenes, and then the ending.
Any battle scene in "Lord of the Rings." I got chills when I saw the elephants stomping through the battle of Minas Tirith.
"The Matrix Revolutions," the battle of Zion, and the final battle between Neo and Smith (the slow-motion punch scene still impresses me!)
"The Matrix Reloaded," the 100-man burly brawl.
"The Matrix," bullet-time!
"Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith," the opening battle of Coruscant
"Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones," the asteroid chase scene and the clone war battle later on.
"Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace," the pod-racing scene.
"Independence Day," when it first came out, all of the battle scenes really blew me away.

...what can I say, battle scenes really impress me.

I've also been really impressed by all of the CGI-animated films. All of the Pixar films are really impressive. Both of the "Final Fantasy" movies are great. I just watched "Dragon Hunters," and it has some great graphics in it too.

Jurassic Park dinosaurs. Was blown away when that movie came out and the fx still holds up and looks better than most stuff today.
