Default speaker wire???

I know this has been ban tied around again and again, as to the 16 cents a foot to the multi thousands a foot. I am setting up a new room and need a complete set of wires.

I saw a recommendation here.........(looked for hours and can't find it again).........copper with some silver strands. Solid covering, with one wire square covered and the other one round covered. The site had other HT "stuff" but mostly wire. I have googled and also and just can't find it.

Any thoughts...........or recommandations

Thank, Jack

There's a really good discussion about speaker cabling and such in the thread below.....many posters have made some recommendations and certainly provided insight from their own experiences.

if i were building a new HT i would by a couple of rolls of this (or maybe in the 250' rolls size)

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

and i'd run it for all of my 7 speakers. the advantage of running the 12/4 is:

i won't have to worry about signal or voltage drop with the 12awg wire

i am set should i decide to bi-amp or bi-wire in the future if i'm not doing it from the start

this cable is CL2 rated so i can run it in the walls

i won't have to worry about changing my mind after the fact about "i wish i had run some 12/4 and now i want to bi-amp my stuff and can't" or "could this 18/2 or 16/2 i ran long distances be the cause of my crappy sound?"

i'm just saying, we've all been there that is why we learn from the past to plan for the future. that is what i would do if i were doing this from scratch knowing then what i know now! then i'd have peace of mind!

I have the 12/4 wire. It is really hefty wire. I just got my techflex today. I'll work on the cosmetic upgrade in the next few weeks. no hurry since they work fine just as they are.

For my surrounds, I was considering using the second pair for the trigger wires.

Thanks for all the replies...............I am running in walls and ceiling.........the 4 makes good sense.........(planning ahead is something I would not have thought of)!

Who make "good" ends.

I used Monster banana ends..........(about 8 years ago).........thought they were pretty neat, but after a few moves, they would come loose and need re-tightening. I have not looked if they have upgraded them.

I have a bunch of Radio Shack closed end banana plugs. I'm thinking of swapping them out only because they seem to have dulled over time.

cableorganizer.com has some really nice looking gray ones, but they are little pricey.
