United Kingdom Blu-ray won't overtake DVD until 2013

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/351124/b...dvd-until-2013

discuss..

personally I think 2013 sounds just about right but i have no doubt consumer Habits may drift towards Blu-ray in greater numbers way before 2013

Blu-Ray adoption in PCs appears to be a slow process. If anything, 2013 might be an optimistic estimate.

Your thread title should mention that this is PC-based optical drives, not a general statement.

I still think the article is linked with Blu-ray in general and Home media. for instance my first DVD player was the ps2 as was the ps3 my first Blu-ray player if the same argument of HD quality can be won on a pc then it can only be a stepping stone to a stand alone player. I think further Blu-ray integration
into the PC market can only be good for the format whatever way you look
at things.

blu-ray players are now sold I think for about or under $100. BD prices are coming down. blu will catch DVD sooner than 2013.

Have to agree. Once regular folks (not fanboys like us) realize that Blu-ray players play all the old DVDs with upconversion to their new HDTVs, it will be the death of old DVD players. This will, in turn, lead to more impulse buys of the "more expensive" blu-ray versions of movies...

So many people go to the grocery store and do that rebox thing or netflix via instant watch. I personally don't like to watch anything but blu-ray. No more cable or satellite for me. I'd rather have a good antenna and get free over the air HD. The masses don't care about HD, and that makes me cry....

The article is related to blu and PC, thats what is stated in the opening sentence. However PC media and home entertainment media does effect each other. I was looking for a laptop with a Blu drive so I can watch my movies while on travel. Also, the article failed to mention software designers, with more space on a disk I am sure they will be stepping up graphics and all the good stuff they can squeeze into the space.

You have to keep in mind that with the advent of Blu-ray technology, the price of DVDs has fallen considerably. I have seen used DVDs for as little as 99 cents! So many are taking advantage of these low DVD prices and are stocking up. But this won't last since the last nail in the VHS coffin was hammered in back in December of 2008.

While DVD will be a viable technology for years to come, it will wane as Blu-ray gains momentum, especially with the sub-$100 players coming to market. We have already seen a drop in BD prices as the sales volumes have increased. I think we can look forward to even lower BD stickers as the BDPs and HDTVs gain in market penetration.

Soon as Blu Ray Burners are $50. and blank media is $1. -> $2 range or so.. there won't be much point in using DVD drives anymore.

It is a matter of how long it will take the majority to upgrade dvd players/drives to blu-ray. I think it will be earlier than 2013.
