I was looking at getting a new receiver well actually the denon 4380ci I was looking at the specs on crutchfield and it says it is not THX certified. But all the reviews are excellent on this receiver! Does THX certified even make a difference or is it some type of gimmick??? I have an old pioneer VSX 704s that I bought back in 96 or 97 and it is 175 watts x4 and it will blow your socks of with the raw power, volume and force it can generate I know it is quality of sound that counts and not just power. I refuse to get rid of it though because of sentimental value, it has even traveled to Iraq with me. Many friends have asked to buy it from me but still I refuse. It can easily fill not just a large room with music but any of the entire houses I have lived in. But it has no mention of thx on it. So does THX or THX2 or THX2 ultra really matter???

That makes sence. I have an Kenwood KRF-x7775D receiver I got in 2006 wich is 140 watts X 5 it is more advanced than my old pioneer but the pioneer still sounds way better and it doesn't have HDMI either! I don't have the manual at hand but I'm pretty sure it said THX Certified.

If that is the receiver you are looking for, buy it. I own it and it is excellent. Prior to this receiver, I owned a Pioneer Elite with THX. I never used the THX options. |

THX certification just indicates that the hardware in question meets a certain set of minimum requirements.
Here's a list of the different certifications and what they mean: http://thx.com/products/home/logos/index.html Last edited by RocShemp; 09-08-2009 at 05:10 AM. |

Therefore, the THX certification is not the be all to have. Besides, like it was mentioned before, EVERYTHING needs to be certified to really mean anything. Have you seen the THX certified door for $3K? |

I think the more important thing over THX is that Audyssey DynamicEQ is available via a firmware update or for newer 4308ci units shipping in the last year or so. I'm not normally one for EQ features other than calibration (which I even kill for music), but DynamicEQ has made a significant and welcomed difference in my HT setup.

Plenty of receivers out there can meet and exceed the THX spec yet the manufacturers don't bother paying for the certification. Last edited by RocShemp; 09-08-2009 at 02:36 AM. |

This is a good article published a few years ago at the secrets website. This will explain everything you want to know about the THX program.
